Location
The forest is a living and working place where ponies and cattle freely graze the land and help to keep the patchwork of different habitats intact. Deeper in the forest, wild deer browse beneath canopies of mighty oak and beech – natural scenes unchanged by the modern world.
The open heaths of The New Forest are ideal basking grounds for adders and grass snakes, and the many pools dotted around the area make ideal conditions for frogs, toads and lizards. All of these can be seen at The New Forest Reptile Centre, which also offers woodland trails.
There are dozens of events throughout the year to help you get close to nature – from Dawn Chorus Walks to Deer Watches.
Try exploring the forest at different times of year and at different times of day. The forest is most atmospheric at dusk – you also stand the best chance of seeing deer, bats and nightjars.
Also why not call in to the Visitor Information Centres at Lyndhurst, Lymington or Ringwood for an up to date calendar of wildlife walks and events.
Please keep your distance from ponies and donkeys. The forest provides plenty of food for them and they are dangerous to approach. Remember, not feeding them is better for them and better for you!

Just returned from the Forest Park Hotel and have to concur with a number of earlier reports. Very overpriced and we paid extra for a so called Premier Room! The hotel is looking very sad and in desperate need of updating both from the outside as well as the interior e.g. paint peeling off and a general run down feel throughout. Our room was shabby and dirty, the bathroom came direct from the 1970's with a smell that has to be experienced to be believed ! The bathroom was a cupboard in the corner of the room with poor facilities and no lock on the door ! Unlikely to recommend this hotel and certainly would not return. In its favour the staff were polite and breakfast was of a good standard.

The hotel was in a great location for walking in the New Forest. It is right on the edge of the walk to Lyndhurst. Our room was very comfortable and kept clean and tidy for the duration of our stay. My only comment was that there was only a shower and no both - after a hard day's walk I would have liked to have a long hot bath (but that's my fault for not specifying my preference on the booking and the other rooms were full).
The hotel rooms look over either the forest or the grounds - ours looked over the grounds which I imagine would be very nice in the summer. We ate in the restaurant each night and the service was very good. the food wasn't anything special but was pleasant and a reasonable choice.
