My girlfriend and I stayed in the hotel Carribean as part of an organized Gecko's tour. Thankfully the hotels improved as the tour progressed!
The hotel is adequate for budget travellers. I would echo pretty much all of the above comments. The staff weren't great, the facilities were basic, our room had no windows and the air con was very loud. Breakfast is also a joke!
The only positive is the location. It is located on the Paseo del Prado which is close to Old Havana and the Capitolio etc.
Thankfully we booked 2 nights in the Hotel Inglaterra on the completion of our tour and had a much more enjoyable experience!

Booked a two night stay via " wired destinations" via the internet from Toronto. Was a bit scared after booking upon discovering nasty comments about " wired destinations" being fraudulent. happy to say, our booking went well. Paid approx $84 for a double room.
Room had no window but was clean. Small in size and only had a shower with poor water pressure and lukewarm water. Needless to say, you don't spend much time in your room when touring Havana.
Location of this budget hotel is tops. It was safe and no issues arose.
Nothing was stolen and there was always a security man outside in the lobby.Breafast was not too good, but enough to get you by until lunch.
This is a good hotel for the budget traveller. I noticed there were alot of visitors from Eurpoe, young and elderly, staying here. Really, the proce was right and we really had a nice time in Havana for may day celebrations.
