I stayed in one room with our two daughters, and our friends stayed in a separate room, during late March 2008. We were in town for the NCAA regionals at Ford Field, and this hotel was a very convenient choice. There is nothing fundamentally wrong with this hotel itself - other than the fact they were renovating the restaurant during our stay and serving nothing but a weak continental breakfast. Rooms were adequate, staff was reasonably responsive, valet parking worked okay, etc. My biggest complaint was that I could not find anywhere in the hotel to buy a newspaper on a Sunday morning. If you are going to events somewhere in the two blocks surrounding the hotel, I suppose it makes sense to stay here. It's certainly safe to walk to and from Ford Field or Comerica Park at game times. But at other times (especially after dark), one should be quite careful. Our daughters were freaked out a bit by the (often aggressive) panhandlers. Our party of five was accosted three times in less than one block as we walked back to the hotel from dinner one evening.

The Hilton Garden Inn Detroit is a newer Garden Inn - very modern and clean. It's walking distance to some decent restaurants, which you need because the restaurant was out of service when I was there. You can't really lose with this hotel if you need to stay downtown. Nicer than some "higher end" Hilton's.
