The Lodge At Pico Bonito - La Ceiba, Honduras     4 star hotel

The Lodge At Pico Bonito address: Ap 710, La Ceiba

The Lodge At Pico Bonito details: The Lodge at Pico Bonito is a luxurious and exciting ecolodge in the buffer zone of the largest national park and rainforest in Honduras. The Lodge offers a landscaped outdoor swimming pool, gourmet restaurant and bar, tropical massage, solicitous bilingual staff, expert guides, and a beautiful butterfly sanctuary and nursery, set against the backdrop of the towering peaks of the Nombre de Dios Mountain Range. From the Lodge, guests can conveniently explore the hidden wonders of a pristine rainforest by foot or mountain bike, raft the exciting Cangrejal River, explore the Caribbean coast on horseback, view over 300 species of birds, and boat through the Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge to see the exotic wildlife. The coral reefs of the Bay Islands and Cayos Cochins Biological Marine Reserve are less than 35 miles away, and the Lodge is happy to help its guests arrange a snorkeling, scuba diving or dolphin swimming excursion. Overnight trips to the Mayan ruins of Copan are also easily arranged.

I went to Pico Bonito with a friend who won the trip after placing a bid on PBS. To get to the lodge, you have to first fly into one of the major airports (we chose San Pedro Sula from Houston, TX) and then you can either take a long bus ride or a puddle jumper flight into La Ceiba. The lodge is about a 20 minute drive fro La Ceiba airport and is in a national rainforest. The hotel will pick you up from the airport. The resort is very remote. The grounds are gorgeous, but this is not the kind of place where you want to go off on your own without first asking the staff where it is safe to walk. Remember you are in a rainforest. There are lots of dangerous, wild animals, insects, reptiles, etc. If you want to get up close and personal with nature, this is the place. This is not a beach resort. Unless you plan to stay by the pool, forget sandals and sundresses. Think hiking boots and clothes that will keep your skin covered but that are made for hot, humid weather. And think DEET:-) The food is excellent. It's about $25 for dinner but they make everything fresh and base the meals off of what is growing fresh on the grounds when you are there. The cabins are beautifully appointed. The staff is superb. When we were there, a hurricane came through and we had to evacuate. The staff was more than helpful getting us home safely. This place is paradise. Enjoy!
