Stayed there for 2 nights. Beautiful little town. Great scenery. Clean rooms. We were kept waiting about an hr. to check in. While we waited some additional guests came that had Roberto's cell#. They were given the room w/ a view that we had requested and verified through email confirmation w/ Roberto. They checked in before us? We were grateful and happy to have found the place. The room was clean and nice we were definitely pleasant and happy @ this point.
The next morning I asked Roberto if breakfast was still being served. I was hoping to see some of that great helpfulness that i read about. He grunted @ me and told me to walk to the restaurant and find out for myself.
After breakfast, i stood in the tiny lobby while Roberto sat @ his computer and stood looking @ the different pamphlets of local activities about 4ft away from him. I was hoping again to converse w/ him about any suggestions he might have. I asked him. He had none. Just a few more grunts.
Our 1st dinner @ his restaurant was interesting. The food was great. Roberto told us a long story about his divorce and some other kind of depressing stuff. He seemed like a nice enough guy, but a bit depressive. He criticized our wine choice, but we kind of enjoyed his "odd" company.
The 2nd night we ate @ his restaurant again. It's really the only game in the small town. this is were things got interesting. My wife had felt ill that day. We found out later she was expecting our 1st son. I mentioned this to Roberto when we sat down. It was friday night and a good amount of locals were present. I ordered some wine moderately priced $40-50 bottle. During dinner I drank 2 very slim glasses of wine. the bottles are not kept on the table. When I requested another pour, I was asked if i would like the same or something different. I asked why, was the bottle empty? After much protesting, I was was very reluctantly informed that he had been pouring our bottle to other tables? Maybe this is an Italian custom I'm not familiar w/. I told him no more wine, my wife was ill could we please have the check. He proceeded to not return to the table for 45 minutes. Then sent the girl waitress to ask us if we wanted dessert." No, just the check please". I thought it was proper to just leave and pick up the tab in the morning as my wife was very ill and Roberto was the hotel owner, surely we could handle it then. My wife is incredibly forgiving and kind hearted and insisted we wait it out. that was another 20-30 minutes, until we were allowed to leave.
In general, Roberto is a bitter guy, that does not like Americans all that much. If you don't have to interact w/ him, the hotel is OK, but in a little town like that good luck........
The surrounding countryside is unbelievable. The days in that area were great, but I would look for other accommodations if you can. There were options for other restaurants in neighboring towns. It just means you have to drive those old winding streets in the pitch black of night.
