My wife and I accompanied by three male friends to celebrate a milestone birthday have just returned from an excellent week at the Atalaya. The hotel is in two blocks, the subsidary lower one undergoing extensive refurbishment and was closed . Our room had been refurbished with good quality fittings and furnishings but we did find the beds distinctly firm for our comfort. Our room overlooked the pool and the magnificent gardens with the park beyond and the situation of the hotel to our mind is one of its strongest points. It was also very quiet at night , a great advantage as we don't like the noise of air con at night and always have a window open if possible. The public areas were spacious and to the standard one would expect from a 4* hotel. The clientele were almost entirely over 50 as we were, and being perhaps a kilometre from the beach as well as the best part of 150m above it would be a deterent for young families .Buffet style meals, food plentiful but I think there would be considerable congestion in the dining room when it is busy but given a 3 hour period for dinner this should be avoidable. Breakfast coffee and fruit juice were out of machines and I have definitely tasted better. Although there was a wide choice of food to cater for the differing tastes of English, German and Spainish guests, it lacked imagination nor was it laid out in a particularly logical manner so that there were always diners wandering aimlessly about. Overall no more than 75% for food. Externally ,the 1970's building is showing its age with tile cladding missing in places and concrete showing signs of spalling but overall not architectually displeasing and distinctly better than some other hotels nearer the beach. The swimming pool was kept covered at night and at a pleasant temperature for mid December. The grounds were immaculate , the staff helpful and courteous. This is an excellent base for walkers who have hired a car as the hotel is clear of the town centre congestion and only a couple of kilometres from the motorway thus allowing convenient access to the many walks . Food times are generous allowing long days out . As previous reviewers have noted, drinks are cheaper in the bars in town but we preferred the ambience and comfort of the hotel. We would definitely return.
