The Phoenix was recommended by a friend who works for the government in DC. It is far more than I have ever paid for a hotel in my life, but this trip was a once-in-a-lifetime dream, so I decided it was well worth the cost to be close to sights and Union Station, safe, and comfortable. This was also advised by friends who had traveled to DC and wished they had stayed downtown. The room was clean, the bed was fantastic, the turndown service was a treat, the staff were above and beyond helpful, the hotel was lovely, and the Dubliner's pub had fantastic food that is some of the best in DC. I was not bothered by the construction going on next door. Ask for a room facing Union Station and on an upper floor. When booking last October, I was advised there was no AAA rate for the first week in June, but after reading Frommer's guide which gave tips on saving money for hotels, I tried again. The reservationist in-house was very kind and helpful. Being a fellow teacher, she understood my limited finances and told me the rates to vary from day to day. After checking rates again, she was able to save me $ over my 5 day stay when I was just a few hours away. She even came out to meet me when I arrived. If you are planning a trip to DC, this hotel can make all the difference in your stay as it did for me. I would love to come back to DC again and stay at the Phoenix. It saved me lots of time each day, was safe, and worth every penney!
The Phoenix Park Hotel in Washington DC had only one thing going for it, the Dubliner Bar and Restaurant. Save your money and stay at a hotel that values its customers. Come to the Dubliner for drinks, food, and fun. I booked a two night stay for Sat. and Sun. and got very little sleep on Mon. morning due to the construction zone located directly adjacent to my room. The whole side of the building surely was affected with construction beginning at 6:30 am. What I don't understand is how they can put anyone in those rooms knowing they are completely unusable. The room was otherwise merely OK, similarly there wasn't a wet bar in my room as advertised, and it smelled of cigarettes. Show some foresight, open a window and don't book people on that side of the hotel on work days. The service people were not very helpful due to lack of attentiveness. Staff would regularly be on their cell phones instead of paying attention to their duties. Hard to believe this is a 4 star hotel.
I picked this hotel because it was "historic" and not part of a chain. The hotel was nice and clean and the front desk staff was pleasant. My room was very small. Although that did not bother me very much, it might bother others. There was just enough space to walk around the bed. There was no space to put your suitcase other than on the bed. My biggest complaint was that the room was cold. I set the thermostat to the max, but only cool air was blowing out of the vent. I informed the front desk as I left for my event. When I returned, the room was still cold. I told the front desk as I left about it and they are sending me a coupon for a free night as compensation. The only othe complaint that I had was that the staff kept entering my room. The man came to check the honor bar after I had checked in and arrived in the room. As I was eating breakfast, the maid came into the room and left the change of linens on the dresser. As I was in my room waiting for my transfer to the airport, the maid came again to clean the room. Check out time is 1:00 and all this happened before 9:30. I just didn't expect the staff to be in and out of my room so many times before check out time. This was not a bad hotel. The location was good for me (near Union Station).
We spent 5 nights during the Cherry Blossom Festival at the Phoenix. The accomodations were great and we have stayed in numerous other hotels in dc. We came in by Amtrak from Chicago and literally the hotel is across from Union Station. The staff was friendly and ate a few meals at the Dubliner. i would highly recommend this hotel to a business traveler or to a family with all ages of children.
This hotel is lovely, clean, comfortable, gracious, convenient to Union Station, Capitol Hill and many other of Washington's finer attractions, and features a great Irish bar and restaurant on the premesis. I had a great stay and highly recommend it.
