Expert Tip. The JW Marriott San Francisco sets itself apart from the competition with signature valet service and personal butlers, who can be summoned 24 hours a day at the mere touch of a button. My favorite request included unpacking my suitcase.

So I probably one of the few that am not giving this hotel 4 stars. Knowing the Marriott brand well I have even higher expectations for their flagship line, the JW Marriott hotels. I had a nice stay but have stayed at far nicer JW's in other cities.
We arrived around 10pm and had to wait outside for someone (anyone) from the Bell Desk to valet our car. Next step was check-in and having never been to the hotel before, I didn't realize you had to go to the 3rd floor for check-in until I asked someone else on the 1st floor that looked about as lost as I did. Check in once we found it was quick and pleasant. We had a very well appointed room on the 16th floor, the bathroom was probably the nicest area in the room. I have seen Renaissance hotels (another Marriott line) and other JW's with nicer rooms; the look was fresh and modern but some of the furnishings looked a little too well used.
Checkout was slow because the checkout through the in-room TV did not work and there was a lengthy line at the front desk downstairs.
The concierge lounge breakfast was almost top notch and the concierge recommendations on area restaurants were most welcome. They continually advised us to avoid walking in the neighborhod late at night... for a reason I never understood. The neighborhood seemed fine to us with lots of people out, even after 12 midnight on a week night.

Check in / front desk

We stayed here while in town for a friend's wedding. We were very impressed with the location and the room, and will absolutely come back when we are in town again.
Check-in is on the third floor. When we first arrived, we wandered around for a bit before we realized that we had to go upstairs. The one thing that the hotel does need to work on is its downstairs bell-staff - not only when we first arrived, but every time we entered and left the building, there were very few employees on the ground floor, and they seemed to be making a concerted effort to ignore the guests. Otherwise, service was very good. At check-in, the front desk gave us a masterfully worded note from the manager, explaining that it was the weekend of the gay pride parade, so there were a lot of wonderful activities in town, but guests needing to travel on Sunday should allow themselves extra time - it was beautifully done.
The hotel decor was very nice, more modern than the typical JW Marriott, looked like it was just renovated. The lobby spaces, bar, etc. were very nice and fairly busy while we were there. The room was a good size, beautifully furnished, very large bathroom, good amenities, linens, and a very comfortable bed, large window, pretty good view, and very quiet. The location was great - close to Union Square, but a block or two away from the hectic masses.
