The staff could not have been more friendly and efficient and the hotel is a delight of courtyards and oak balustrades. The balcony rooms are a joy but are the only rooms with windows that open. You should also not expect great parking - you are in the heart of the city but you can expect shopping and restaurants and a waterfront walk right from the hotel doorstep, efficient and pleasant staff and courteous service. Rooms all have fake fireplaces and the city views from the 4th floor balconies are delightful.. Read review

Upon arriving, we found out that we had been upgraded to a King room overlooking a beautiful courtyard. Charming decoration and a hotel with some real history, in an ideal location in the Gaslamp quarter.. Read review

The staff are casually dressed in golf shirts and, although friendly, do not have a crisp appearance. All in all, this hotel looks like a place that the owners built and have either forgot about, or are not making enough money to keep it up to date. The location, however, is very good, with all the Gaslamp District restaurants an easy walk away.
Antique furniture should not just mean old and original - scratched tops and drawers that do not close are less than one expects today. The cute historical displays seen from the elevator at each floor are stale and hard to see through the dirty windows. The much vaunted courtyard is sterile and mostly empty except for some little used garden furniture.
I'd like to start by saying that my stay at the Horton was fundamentally fine - the room was clean and comfortable (although the bed was a little soft for my taste) and the location is great. The staff were also friendly and efficient. I would also question the value of having gas fires in each room in San Diego, especially considering the aircon in my room barely seemed to work at all.
