My boyfriend and I stayed at the Hotel Pennsylvania for 10 nights in June this year. I was very worried before we arrived, from reading the reviews on here! but my fears subsided when we checked in at around 8pm (quite late do to our flight) and there were no queues and the lady was funny and accommodating. It also could have helped that our friend who lives in NY was with us. The staff were friendly to us, as were we to them, which helped a lot. Our room was spacious, clean and comfortable and we were happy with that. We knew it wouldn't be a luxurious 5 star hotel, but for what we needed it was perfect - a place to crash at the end of a long day! and the location was fantastic. It was our first time in NY (and overseas) so everything was right on our doorstep which was great. Going to NY again I would probably stay in a quieter area, but I would recommend the hotel.

Got put into a room on the 6th floor and it was an awful rabbit hutch. Remembered that I read about this ages ago so asked for a room change (standard practice in the US?). Got put on the 13th and the room was much better. Someone said that if you are above the 12th floor the rooms are OK but below they are dire. Room was cleaned daily and sheets and towels replaced daily. Dont expect luxury here but for the money it is more than OK. The location is spot on. Stayed here 4 times (on a high floor) and would go again for the money. Yes, you will queue for ever at the check-in so be prepared. Booked on Octopustravel.com and got it for ?450 for 4 nights! For the middle of NY, this is excellant. Outside hotel, Maddison Sq Gardens. Turn right, Macey's. Look right, Empire State Blg. Look down, subway. Buy a week long ticket for all in travel on tubes and buses. Well worth the money
