3My Husband & I stayed here from Friday, 2nd November for 3 nights.
It was our first time to New York so I had booked it upon a recommendation by some colleagues. They had told me that this hotel was very basic but that the location was excellent because a lot of places were within walking distance and more importantly that it's not as expensive as other hotels. I did compare the prices to some other options I looked at on the web and it certainly seemed to be the case, unless of course you managed to get a "special" or one didn’t mind some of the tacky places that were on offer. Therefore, on these grounds we decided to try out the Herald Square Hotel.
I would now entirely agree with what we had been told in advance; the Hotel is rather old fashioned, nothing glamorous about it. Our room was very basic, very small but clean and it looked out onto a wall and fire escape (no room with a view here!! ). There was some sort of fan or air con system at our window blowing in cold air on the first night, although there was an adequte amount of bed clothes on the bed so we were still warm but standing or walking about in the room it felt cold. We told the receptionist the next day and I think the heating was turned on as it seemed better. During our 3 nights stay, there wasn't really any noise, apart from the air con in the room, so we were grateful for this.
In conclusion, we would recommend this hotel if you are just looking to be centrally located in a basic (with TV), clean, very small room without any fancy trimmings at a reasonally priced rate. When I say "reasonably pricedt", well this is New York we're talking about, so the prices are above and beyond what we'd normally expect to pay. I think it's suitable for visiting tourists who will be on the move throughout most of the day and just want to use their room as a base; somewhere to sleep after a day's shopping and doing all the tourist sites. Just be prepared it's not the Hilton by no stretch of the imagination, that's for sure. :)
