I stayed at the W Union Square for 4 nights in June 2006..and expensive bill, but worth it. Our room was HUGE, as was the bathroom (both of which I hear are hard to come by in NYC). The staff fufilled every request and did so extremely quickly. The concierge (I think his name was George) was amazing. He was able to give us wonderful reccomendations and was happy to help when we called him throughout our daily excursions for guidance. Every day we were given a set of the Bliss lotions, shampoos, soap, etc which was a very nice touch. It was so easy to sleep there and we were never awakened by city sounds, it was a great escape in such a busy place.
Loved this hotel. Clean and tidy, chic without being stuffy. Surprised by the convenience/location of this hotel to the subway. Been to NYC many times but was not too familiar with Union Square - GREAT location! Staff was very accomodating and friendly, although we didn't have any outrageous special requests. We were part of a large group and so our group rate made this an EXCEPTIONAL bargain! But do some searching - some of these rooms go on sale cheap. Don't expect a good view - we didn't have one, but with the location, it wasn't important... we were out and about. Try the (quirky) Green Cafe next door for a quick, yummy breakfast and the Wildwood BBQ down the street for a great fun casual dinner. (surprisingly good bbq for NYC) Would stay again soon! In a heartbeat!
I was really disappointed by the service at this W hotel. I reserved a non-smoking room, but instead they put me into smoking room. I have to come down to lobby to change to a non-smoking room. The shower in the non-smoking room was unclean~mold inside of shower floor. There is no other non-smoking room for us to switch when we called the front desk. Since we booked 6 nights there, we requested to clean the mold while we are gone in the daytime. Nothing has been done when we returned to the hotel that night, still mold inside of the shower. I called front desk, concierge, & housekeeping to solve this issue, but all they did was apologized. No one actually come up to the room to check it out or clean it. Terrible service. We end up buying bleach in the nearby Walgreen to clean up the shower floor ourselves. The entire experience is terrible at this W hotel. The only good thing about the hotel is the location, it 's pretty convenience.

We paid $469/night. The staff were polite. The rooms and lobby were relatively clean and small. There was nothing special about the decor in the rooms. No complimentary internet, coffee/tea in the room. However there was a complimentary juice dispenser with a stack of tiny little plastic cups (the kind you use to gargle with at the dentist) in the lobby. My friends whose rooms faced Union Square complained that it was too nosy and they couldn't sleep. Not worth it. It's all hype.
