The hotel itself is impeccable. Stylish, but not kitchy, opulent but still descreet. Everything about good service and perfect location is true. The room, although may not have been the largest I have seen, was certainly the most pleasant I've stayed in. Design, style, amenities, little touches here and there, it was perfect. I do have a few grudges against them: (1) In a top hotel in S. California, I would really expect a swimming pool. Their explanation was 'because of the historical nature of our hotel, there is no pool'. Well, the historical nature has not stopped them from sticking a gym, wifi access (free in the lobby) and convention rooms there, so that is a lame excuse. They do let you use the pool of another hotel next door, but it was not very good. (2) The service is sometimes over the top. They go around doing their room cleaning in the morning, then in the afternoon they bring you some mineral water (why not leave the bottles at the cleaning time?). Finally, they do an evening shift asking whether you would need some ice. So no sooner than you get back to your room, take your clothes off before nipping to the shower, someone knocks the door, offering you water or ice etc. Sometimes that felt too much. Why not sticking an ice machine there? The historical nature I guess. (3) In the end, they wanted to charge us an awful lot of money for stuff from the minibar we did not take, but without any questions corrected the bill when I complained . They also charge 2 bucks for each toll-free (1-800) phonecall from the room, something no other American hotel does in my experience. But overall, a very positive experience. And that room... ah...
