We stayed in Hotel Alexander for 3 nights in June. Weggis must be one of the most beautiful places in Switzerland and I definately recommend a stay in this small and picturesque lake village. Although the Hotel Alexander is a good 15 minutes walk to the centre, which means the Boat Station, we didn't find it a problem at all. The walk is all along the promenade by the lake on the main road of Weggis, so the views of the surrounding mountains and lake Luzern are always breathtaking. When we arrived at the Alexander we were impressed by the gardens and the large outdoor swimming pool. There's plenty of space to relax outdoors just admiring the fabulous views of the lake, right in front of us, or in the terrace. The bedroom and bathroom were quite clean and adequate, not big but not too small, Decor is pleasant in light colors. Balcony to the rear of hotel, with mountain view (we could see the Rigi cable car). Regarding food we were not so impressed. We were on a half-board basis (breakfast + dinner) and although we knew it shouldn't be buffet style meals for dinner, the said "5 courses with choice of main course", left a lot to be desired. The food was always beautifully presented but the choices were very limited and whatever we choose always came in very small portions. And not particularly tasty, as there was some unidentifiable vegetables completely tasteless. Bread was not readly available for guests, we had to ask everytime we wanted an extra slice. Friendly restaurant staff (all young gilrs) but without enough knowledge (for example, one night I asked for olive oil to put on my salad and she didn't know what that was ). Also they know nothing about beers, as my partner asked for what type of beer they had and the reply was "we have normal beer!" ... so he had normal swiss beer, whatever that means. It was all "nouvelle cuisine" style food: looks nice but don't really serve the purpose - feeding someone who spent the day walking in the mountains! Breakfast was quite basic for a 4 star hotel with spa, poor selection of bread and meats , rarely seen cooked food. Excellent carrot juice though. But everything displayed in small quantities, giving the impression that they didn't want to spend too much money on guests meals. If you, like us, give a great deal of importance to food while on holiday, this is not the right hotel We didn't try the Spa, but we used the indoor swimming pool and that was the highlight of our stay in the Alexander. At 7 am we had the pool just for ourselves, so could appreciate the trully spectacular scenery outside the glassed walls. Unforgettable, especially with the day light at that time of the day. Conclusion: I absolutely recommend Weggis, it's a beautiful place, lots of things to do (Rigi and Pilatus mountains are a must), the lake is as clean and colouful as you can imagine (sometimes turquoise blue, sometimes emerald green), several bars, shops and restaurants are in hand. We went one night to Tiffany's Bar, very cosy with an almost surreal small esplanade. There's plenty of hotels to choose from, so if you want to indulge in serious gastronomic delicacies while in the lakes&mountains, don't choose the Alexander Hotel. It's just not good value for money. We have stayed in 3 star hotels in Norway and the selection and variety of food was completely different. Here there was hardly any variety. But if food is not on your top priorities, yes it's a good hotel with excellent facilities. Just a final note about the owners, whom we didn't find that friendly (as oposed to some other reviewers). In some occasions we felt a bit ignored. Overall we would not stay in this hotel again as it's not good value and there's plenty more hotels in Weggis. Please see my Webshots photo albums with plenty of pictures. here's the link [--] You can also see my other Switzerland photo albums, as the "port of call" after Weggis was .. Wengen ! Hope you enjoy !

We stayed ten days and did not want to go home. Weggis is an ideal centre for the area and has more possible excursions than you can fit into a fortnight. The hotels are comfortable and the food well above average. The staff are friendly and give a very good service. We picked the Gerbi because we did not like the idea of a block of flats (appartments)! But a block of flats the Alexander is not!! Next time we will stay there. It is modern and comfortable and has excellent views out over the lake and is away from (an admittedly quiet) road. There are many walks which are well signed and the ferries provide a comprehensive service. The lake is large - 3 hours to the far end, with many tiny villages to stop at en route. We bought a Swiss Half Fare card but for Weggis a Tell Pass would have been better value. From the Hotels the pier at Hertenstein is a more pleasant walk but there is not much in it for distance or scenery. We took nearly a week to find the Minimarket which is behind the Victoria, opposite the tall church. We spent many weeks in anticipation watching the Weggis webcams on MySwitzerland.
