Beautiful old building with a lot of history, lovely courtyard with bright flowers everywhere… however the interior décor could definitely do with sprucing up a bit, mould and peeling paint on the stairs and in the function room.
We stayed in one of the family rooms on the top floor for 2 nights at “wedding guest” rates. The room was a lovely size, nice and airy and plenty of room for the 3 of us. The double sofabed for my daughter was ready made up and was roomy and comfortable for her. The bathroom was clean and in full working order. Really the only downside was the yellowing and peeling paintwork, mainly in the bathroom.
Breakfast on both mornings was delicious; bacon, scrambled eggs, hash browns, mushrooms etc., plus toast, cereals, fruit. The only other meal we had there was the Wedding Breakfast, which on the whole was of a high standard apart from the sirloin of beef being well overcooked (but then again, they had the whole room to cook for so maybe they were trying to cover the majority?).
We were actually right above the function room of the wedding we were attending, so we anticipated that there would be some noise when we took our daughter to bed before the party ended; however it really was extraordinarily loud. Luckily she’d had a full day and fell asleep anyway, but my partner was none to pleased that he was missing a party and couldn’t hear the TV!
On a safety note, the tall and narrow staircase up to the room was fairly difficult for a small child to navigate, and the 3 sash windows in the room meant that I was always slightly on edge when we opened them because they were at child height and had no latch to enable us to partially open them at a safe height.
Disappointing lack of late bar service for hotel guests, especially considering the event.
All in all I would have been very disappointed if I'd paid full price for the room, however we didn't so I'd rate it at "ok".

Myself and a friend had a short break to the george hotel in huntingdon, the break was advertised in the waitrose magazine. The George was was having an annual Shakespeare prodution. So far so good.We then were shown to our room, the room was very shabby, wash hand basin in the bedroom(very unhygienic)There was worse to come the bathroom door had no lock but this really did not matter because the door itself did not shut. The keyhole was stuffed with paper.
In the bathroom the light fixture had no shade-should we have used the shower and water had been accidently sprayed out then one can only imagine, with horror, the consequences.
never again would I stay at this hotel.
