1When my girlfriend and I first arrived late in the evening, we discovered that the doors to Westside Rentals were locked and the lobby was closed. Not what I wanted to discover after a long trip and arriving in LA late at night. So we broke out the cell phone just to get them to open the door for us. It was a big inconvenience to have the lobby closed after 6:00 pm.
There was no parking at the building but they provided us with a parking pass to a nearby parking lot (about a block away). Problem with the lot is that is shared by a nightclub that often has a long line-up of cars waiting for the valet. I was worried that there would be a situation where we wouldn't be able to find any place to park and when you're thousands of miles from home on a long road trip, that's not very encouraging. Having the parking further away from the hotel means that your belongings (and your vehicle for that matter) don't feel so secure.
The room seemed average at first, but there were many problems. First and foremost was the bed; it was incredibly uncomfortable with springs sticking into our backs and squeaked very badly. When I'm on vacation, the last thing I want to worry about is how the bed is so much worse than the bed I have at home.
The room included satellite TV service which seems great, but the cable box wasn't even properly connected when we arrived. Fortunately, I knew a thing or two about TV hook-ups; if I didn't, I would never have figured out how to get the TV to work. The hotel also provided a dvd player in the room, but again, if you don't know how to hook it up, it can be a major pain. The TV is also high up in a corner so it is uncomfortable to watch the TV because you have to strain your neck. You could borrow DVDs from the lobby but we never got a chance to do so, mostly because the lobby was not open at a time when you would consider watching a DVD.
The bathroom was fine except for what we thought was a lack of hot water. Turned out that the shower faucet h/c indicator was reversed so you had to turn it to a cold setting to get hot water. Quite an annoyance.
The room did include some helpful amenities including a microwave, mini-fridge, and a dresser/drawer. There was also in suite DSL access, although you need your own laptop to take advantage of it. However, you need to request items like hair-dryers and irons from the lobby.
The hotel has a laundry room for guests to use. In the laundry room, you can also find the 24-hour $0.50/minute internet access which is a coin operated wall-mounted machine with a stool in front of it. There are three computers in the lobby for guests to use and I paid $0.50 a minute (although the employees seemed confused that I was even giving them money). Of course, you can only use these computers when the lobby is open.
You have to request housekeeping services and you have to have the door sign out before noon. The first day we stayed there, we left the sign out before 11:00 am and when we returned to the hotel at 11:00 pm the sign was still hanging there and nobody had come by to do the housekeeping and/or change the towels.
Westside Rentals is a block north of Hollywood Blvd and it's about a 15 minute walk to get as far as Grauman's Chinese Theater. The area surrounding the hotel isn't particularly scenic and at night is not the safest feeling place around. We had to pass by quite a few seedy people and we even walked past a drunken man passed out on the street. The view from our room consisted of the brick wall of the adjacent building.
The location of the hotel is probably the biggest selling point. For the price-tag however, you might as well try and stay somewhere a little more expensive for less hassle. Westside Rentals unfortunately proved to be well below our expectations.
