We stayed at the Celal in August 2005 while it was still being renovated. We were moved there from another hotlel which we had found unacceptable. What a pleasure! Our rooms were small, but sufficient for touring travelers. The hotel was quiet; the rooms afforded spectacular nighttime views; the staff was extraordinarily friendly (while not being intrusive) and helpful. The dining was tasty and cozy. One drawback--no one knew much about train travel. While I would rate it "good" against others, for the price and proximity to top points of interest I would rate it "excellent."
Very friendly and helpfull people at reception desk.
Very good location for turists and near the metro-tram.
Hotel is ok, but 4 stars is(too) high.
Room 106 is linked with a door to the next room resulting in noice from room next door, choose another room if you can.

Charming attractive hotel with lots of character and friendly staff. Quiet and brilliantly located near to all the main sites. Quiet area in the evening so if you want to go out clubbing every night, perhaps not for you, but there are enough little restaurants nearby including a lovely fish place. My room wasn't enormous (but I was on my own so they gave me a small double) but the simple elegance of the decor (designed by Belgian designer) made it seem more spacious than it was, it was light and airy and I could see Aghia Sophia and the Blue Mosque from my window. Lots of nice touches like lovely carpets on the landings, a bookshelf where travellers take and leave books, a nice roof terrace, and delicious breakfast. Advertised rates were ?150 for a double but I booked on the web at ?109 per night for a double which I think was excellent value for a nice boutique type hotel. I intend to go back to Istanbul and to stay at the Celal Sultan again.
Oh and I left a blouse behind which they found, kept and friends of mine picked up when they were in the area shortly afterwards. That is what I call great service.
