"Great hotel, great staff"Posted: Mon, Nov 23 2009Value:
3I took a small group to visit Istanbul and chose Acropol for its wonderful location, just a few steps from the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque. It is located on a lively street with many restaurants and shops of various types. Just on the other side of the mosques is the ultramodern street tram, which makes all parts of Istanbul accessible easily and cheaply. We could not have been happier. The rooms are clean and comfortable with all the usual amenities. Both the sidewalk cafe and the rooftop restaurant (with wonderful views of the tops of the Mosques and also out over the Marmara) had excellent and reasonably priced foods including turkish specialities and international dishes more suited to the timid palate - the buffet breakfast was plentiful with fresh fruits cereals, breads, juices, excellent coffee and more. Free internet access in the basement was a real plus. Despite the liveliness of the street, our rooms remained quiet, even though we were visiting at the time of the World Cup finals which were broadcast at several of the local street cafes.
But the best part of our stay was the staff. The proprietor, Hasan Gulkaynak, was attentive to all of our requests and his staff was thoroughly cordial and helpful for all our requests - a door-to-door bosporus cruise at the last minute and many individual requests. Mr. Gulkaynak is evidently the head of a local hospitaility group which has put together the best map for tourist for Istanbul that I have seen. It includes several well designed walking tours with clear instructions and guide information and as a plus it was free. This attention to details and anticipating needs was consistent throughout the staff.
I will definitely use this hotel again for any groups I bring to Istanbul and for my own personal travel.
