THE hotel to stay at many years ago but since then other hotels of higher standards for same or better price opened. I do like the lobby area (lots of very nice statutes & replicas of bas reliefs and stupas) and the swimming pool is not bad either. 1 queen size bed rooms for rooms where we requested 2 beds, despite the fact that we booked the rooms months in advance plus our travel agent had written confirmations from the hotel confirming the same. The management ended up putting in a rollaway in my room, and then a rollaway in another room where the couple didn't need an extra bed, an no rollaway in the room where the two girls didn't want to share a bed, and in the suite, the king size bed was actually two single beds/mattresses pushed together. 5:00 pm to turn the beds, housekeeping that do not show up at all to turn the beds, housekeeping that turn up and open doors without knocking,. I'm a short/petite person myself but the bathrooms (ie toilet) are made for guests that are probably 4'5". I've stayed previously next door at the Metropolitan and came back to Sukhothai to eat at the restaurant Celadon (which is excellent), next time I'm in town, will stay some place else and eat at Celadon.. We used the airport transfer service, which was slightly late, but no big deal. We were upgraded from an Executive Suite to a Deluxe Suite and at the mention of 'honeymoon' was sent a complimentary bottle of sparkling wine. As a suite should be, it was extremely spacious with fresh fruit, bathrobes, separate wet room from the bath, two basins etc. Beautiful, relaxing hotel in a central location.. Read review

Slightly surprised by the security reception as my tour guide and driver entered the hotel's driveway, I overall welcomed it highly. I stayed at the hotel twice (two different rooms) separated by a boat tour up the river overnight. Both rooms were quite spacious and extremely clean. I guess this is where I mention the wonderful rubber ducky-in-the-tub-cliche. The long halls which led to the rooms were slightly disorienting, but still a welcome challenge. Whether it was fried minced catfish, Tom Yum Goong loaded with lemongrass and chiles, basil, chili and garlic marigold seabass with tons of lemongrass, mussels in clay pot, broiled squid salad with Siamese ginger and chilis and onions, or the superb green curry prawns with extra crunchy eggplant (I had all of these), the dishes never failed to satisfy. Fresh water chestnuts and jackfruit, and Green tea and taro root/black rice were the desserts of distinction.. Read review

The hotel is one of the most beautiful I have ever visited - both our room and all of the public areas are elegantly styled. The attention to detail was wonderful, with fresh flowers and fruit in our room every day. We enjoyed every aspect of the Sukhothai experience - from the jetlag busting massage and facials that we booked to simply chilling out by the pool for an hour or so before heading back out into the chaos of Bangkok. The food was also fantastic - it was a challenge to hold back on the wonderful breakfast buffet, but worth it for the legendary chocolate buffet that we indulged in one afternoon.. Read review

A regular business traveller to Bangkok, this was my fourth or fifth stay at the Sukhothai in the last 18 months. The Sukhothai is a smaller, older property - a low-rise, with perhaps 6 or 7 floors only. It is definitely not a mega-hotel. This means that all the staff, from the doormen to the waitresses and managers, remember you *by name* and give you a welcome that is warm, genuine, and makes you feel like "home". The front desk staff are highly professional, and check-in is quick and painless. Rooms are spotlessly clean and elegantly furnished with perfect beds and linens, flat-screen LCD TV, desk with wired and wireless internet (USD 20 per day). Bathrooms are spacious with separate toilet, large shower, and independent bathtub. Full amenities and piles of huge bathtowels. Dining is very good: wonderful breakfast buffet (Western, Asian, Japanese). Celadon Thai restaurant is quiet and elegant but you may want to go to Baan Khanitaa just down the street 200m. The La Scala Italian (Tuscan) restaurant is the high-end restaurant but I felt that the value-for-money argument was weak. The most important thing to note is the absolutely fantastic level of service you'll receive, from the doormen right up to the General Manager. The staff of The Sukhothai are all highly professional, accommodating, and welcome you like only Thai people can. Each trip I am touched by the fact they all remember me by name and are genuinely happy to welcome me back. This is a 5-star property and does not really cater to children (no kids' activites apart from the pool, no children's menu, etc). If you're travelling with a young family, you'll probably want a mega-hotel. If you're here on business, or in a couple who can sightsee independently, this is perfection.
