Grand Hotel Union Business - Ljubljana, Slovenia 

Let's start with the good stuff: the location of this Ljubljana hotel is unbeatable. In 3 minutes you're on the main square of the old town with the three bridges. The breakfast is above average. And now for the less positive: Unfriendly staff. Example: Checking-in. Our smiles for the receptionist weren't returned, he just checked our passports, gave us keycards and said "700" - the room number. No smile, no explaining how to get to the room or when and where we can eat breakfast, no offer to have the heavy luggage carried to the room. On the 3rd day, hotel staff busted into our room doing some inspection without any explanation. The staff in the breakfast room was indifferent to us to say the least. Oh well then. The rooms: worn down just as the entire hotel, which must be from the early 70s and haven't seen anything but a superficial renovation. Super soft bed (I prefer hard), shower that goes from hot to cold in an instant (unwanted), only half of the promised TV channels worked. You had to ask for a cable to go online (no free wlan). Horrendous mini bar prices. All in all this hotel is more 3- than 4-star. I could live with all of this, if it weren't for the price, approx. 160? per night for a double. That's just a plain rip-off... Never again.

Ended up at the Grand Union Hotel Business because there was not much available because of a big conference - and it was not cheap either. Would have preferred the Grand Union Executive but this was full. However both hotels seem to share the same restaurants and facilities. The rooms in the Business are comfortable but the decor of both the rooms and the hotel is dour and dull - very old Eastern European. Ate in the restaurant both nights which was very good (not the Cellar, which was closed but the one owned by the hotel in the next street - can't remember the name). There is a nice indoor pool on the eighth floor. Just about OK but would probably look elsewhere for my next visit in Ljubljana.
