4The Clarion Hotel Stockholm is conveniently located just a few steps from a major subway station in a busy commercial neighborhood mostly frequented by locals, far superior to the touristy Central Station area where major most hotels are found. The staff is friendly and helpful, and the hotel itself is clean and well-cared-for. Rooms are a little bigger than average for a European hotel. Windows can't be opened, however, and there's no air-conditioning, so if you come in the summer, be prepared for a warm and stuffy room. Ask for a fan, which will help. The buffet breakfast (included in room rate) is fantastic -- huge quantities of an amazing selection of foods. On the whole, a very positive experience.
I'm giving the hotel 3 stars only, however, because -- although the staff is excellent -- there's not enough of them, not nearly. On our first day, we tried to reach the front desk by telephone on several occasions and no one answered. There were nearly always very long lines at the front desk, and never more than 2-3 people working there. And the housekeeping situation is, to say it bluntly, unacceptable: On our first full day there, we were out of the hotel at 8 AM and when we'd returned at 4 PM, our room still wasn't made up. We complained and were assured that our room would be clean the following day at noon; at 4:30 PM, it still wasn't finished. The manager was apologetic but his excuse ("this is a large hotel, more than 500 rooms") doesn't cut it: Big hotels need big staffs.
Still, it's a good hotel in a good neighborhood. I'd recommend it to anyone who doesn't really care about the room being made up in a timely fashion.
