Albergaria Senhora do Monte - Lisbon, Portugal     

This is the first time a Tripadvisor recommendation has let us down. The hotel is a very average 2 star hotel with a nice view. The soundproofing in the hotel is awful. We were two floors below the bar/restaurant yet could still here the dragging chairs like they were next door. It seemed like you could hear every little noise from each room. The windows were no better, they didn't provide much protection from the noise of the terrace below. Maybe there were different staff from the previous reviews because although reasonably efficient, they were very unfriendly. I don't think I saw a smile from any of them in the whole of our stay. Also we arrived well past check-in time but we still had to hang around until our room was ready. The rooms were clean and the beds comfortable but apart from the view there is really nothing special about this hotel. I'm sure you could do better for the same price.

Very professionally run, under-rated, small family hotel with friendly service and a very comfortable room. Two buildings below a beautiful belvedere (overlook of the city) that is a memorable location . Breakfast was pleasant and enjoyable served on the glass-enclosed top floor with a breathtaking view of the city, the castle , river and south shore. Helpful with recommendations for a local seafood restaurant and convenient local groceries. You can walk down to the city proper, but take taxis to get back up the hill, but they are not expensive in Lisbon. If you are driving, get fully detailed directions from the hotel in advance! Streets narrow , one-way and not well marked. Also, get directions on how to get out. Enjoy a wonderful experience.
