We spent two nights at this lovely hotel. Very nice surroundings, the garden is lovely and the food in the restaraunt is great. We did not expect gazpacho to be so filling! Lofty high ceilings, elegant decor, beautiful marble bath. We were upstairs facing a street where young people party after hours, but closing the shutters took care of their noise. My roommate was not even aware of it - but I did need to close the shutters, after which I slept like a baby. We found the location just fine and within walking distance of the Barrio Alto. SW
This was a very nice hotel with a very pleasant and helpful staff. The room was showing some sign of wear, but it was a nice size and comfortable. The garden was beautiful, but unfortunately the weather was not. This probably affected our experience somewhat. The street was very noisy due to a number of bars so our street facing room was not as peaceful as it could have been.
York House satisfies high standards Posted: Sat, Mar 15 2008

My husband I and recently spent four days at York House and really enjoyed the experience.
Unlike the previous reviewer from Munich, we found our room to be impeccably clean and very nicely furnished and painted, no complaints there whatsoever - we particularly liked the azulejos in the bathroom. The shower was very large and functioned perfectly. Molton Brown shampoo/soap and shower gel supplied in abundance. The room was quiet and facing the courtyard.
Breakfast was good with a large selection of yogurt, cereals, fruit, cheese, ham, bacon and eggs, sausages and a variety of bread and fresh juices. Does one need standardised American breakfast everywhere in the world???
Portuguese coffee tends to be excellent. There was sparkling Portuguese wine and port on the breakfast buffet table every morning which we found charming.
We dined in the restaurant twice and as fairly fussy Michelin-star-spoilt eaters - found the sauces excellent, the quality of the fish we enjoyed perfect and the desserts particularly good (chocolate tarte and passion fruit panna cotta) - no hysterical frilly presentation of the food at all, which is a nice change, but everything very tasty and perfectly cooked. Excellent foie gras, too.
Unlike other reviewers we liked the restaurant staff - the waiter recommended Alentejo/Douro wines on both evenings and we were impressed with both - true discoveries. Not a single regret for having followed the recommendation.
We liked York House immensely, found the rate fine at 150 Euro per night including breakfast, we liked the setting, the vicinity to the Museu de Arte Antiga.
Unfortunately the weather was not good enough to enjoy breakfast outside, but we hope to have that experience when we go back in May or June.
We found the staff helpful, not overly friendly, but absolutely civil.
Nice, but not worth the price Posted: Sun, Feb 17 2008

Stayed here for 1 night in January on business. York House appealed to me because it is fairly small, its not a standard business hotel, and therefore it is more intimate place to stay. It lived up to these expectations, and the Courtyard mentioned in the other reviews is lovely.
The rooms are clean and have everything you need. Bathrooms are lovely and modern, with great showers! Only downside on the decor front is that they do feel a little 'made by Ikea' and lack a little something to make them feel more luxurious.
Tried the Restaurant in the evening - good food, service a little standoffish though. Breakfast was good (self service), but not included in the room price (15E).
Location seemed OK - near the river for restaurants/bars if you want to head out; can probably get public transport to get around the city, but didn't have time to try...
I was shocked to find the room I stayed in would cost 200E normally (I paid 120E). Even at 120E, this is quite expensive for Lisbon.
Not a great hotel if you:
1. Expect immediate service - there is a guy who works here as the porter/barman/waiter... so you have to catch him in the right place at the right time... and if you want a drink at the bar, this can be difficult!
2. Find it difficult to walk up/downstairs (both to get to the hotel and within it)
Summary: a nice little find and more intimate than most hotels, but it seems expensive for what you get in room style.
