My husband and I stayed in this hotel in February 2003, and found it to be an extremely charming and delightful place. You enter the hotel through a large wooden door, and everything inside, from the lobby to the hallways to the courtyard, is beautiful and exquisitely decorated. Our room was small, but very chic with French doors opening onto the courtyard. There was even a complimentary decanter of tawny port on the bedside table. Our bathroom was marble and luxurious, with beautiful tiles. We loved the neighborhood the hotel was located in, within the castle walls. The tile shops right inside the castle gate were wonderful, and we found a beautiful tile painting in one of the shops for a reasonable price. We definitely recommend this hotel and would stay there again.
We (husband and I) just came back from a short vacation in Lisbon. We stayed at Solar Do Castelo, which is right within the walls of Sao Jorge Castle, up on the hill overlooking a good part of downtown Lisbon. We would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a unique experience in Lisbon. The hotel is very nicely decorated and very clean. The staff is beyond nice and helpful! The breakfast (plentiful and tasty) in the inner courtyard is a must. The hotel is safe as well.
However, and I am not assigning a minus for that by no means, be aware that it is quite a trip up and down the hill. So, if you are not the kind of traveler who likes to adventure on cobble stone streets and stairs, you might want to look for a lodging situated at a lower 'altitude'. We (active kind, 40sh and 50sh) found the trips up and down interesting, getting to find out little cafes and restaurants that you have no idea about unless you do adventure on narrow, curvy streets, that sometimes only locals know about. If you do stay at this hotel pay attention to all the open doors and corners that you see in your way. You never know when you find a little gem of a restaurant, where you can savor some delicious Portuguese fare... Definitely wear good walking shoes in Lisbon and you'll have the time of your life. The city is gorgeous and it will reward you tenfold for all the walking!!!
One more thing about the hotel: if you happen to be awaken early in the morning by some strange sounds, please know that those are the castle's residents who are doing that to you... peacocks! They are as loud as beautiful! But, hey, have you ever had a peacock alarm?! Enjoy!
I'ts a great hotel, it's near to the Saint Jorge Castle, very beautifull.
All the staff are really kind and helpfull. The rooms have a good size, and the breakfast at the garden it's really nice. We will come back.
