"Great base for Lisbon"

We were really impressed with this hotel. It may not have the most attractive exterior but you can't beat it for location or value. Its a pleasant 10 minute walk down the city's most exclusive tree-lined boulevard into the centre. The breakfast buffet was one of the best I've ever had and the staff are incredibly attentive. We were celebrating a birthday whilst there and champagne and cake were brought up to our room completely unprompted! They had noticed on the passport - very thoughtful!! Rooms very clean and comfortable. All in all, very highly recommended for a good value break.

The hotel has been recently renovated and is an excellent value for a hotel in Lisbon. A plus that you have is that you are entitled to use the facilities of the five star Hotel Tivoli which is next door and owned by the same company.

Do not stay on the lower floors as the restaurant has a very loud sound system playing ambient music until 1 am that is audible in your room; beware that the non-balcony rooms are awfully small - fine for 2 nights, but any longer (or if there's more than one person staying there) it will be a tight fit. Also, I had to wait 2 hours upon check-in for management to send someone to unlock the safe in the room - even though the valet saw this and promised that it would be fixed within 5 minutes when he was showing me the room, a visit to the front desk was required (1 hour in) to get this solved. I understand that there were likely other priorities and it's a small staff, but it was really annoying as I had only a day and a half to visit and my time was at a premium. Lastly (and just a small detail) there was no hotel phone directory in the room and nothing on the phone to indicate where to call for the front desk or wake-up calls. The chic factor is very high here, but the basics have yet to reach the level of the "image". That said, it was clean and well-located to get around, so I would recommend it with mild caveats.

We have just come back from 4 days in Lisbon at the Tivoli Jardim. The hotel has been recently refurbished & only reopened at the start of May. Although it is now very modern & smart there are still many problems. The swimming pool is not open & there are workmen crawling all over the hotel. They are still bringing in furniture, beds & TV's & for all the time we were there only one of the two lifts were working with no aopparent attempt to have the other one working. Also the stairs could not be used & were fenced off(Fire risk!) Our room had no drawers or shelves for clothes etc. & hair dryer had to be requested. The breakfast is ok but they do not have bread & a bread toasting machine & replenishment of the hot breakfast (every day - scrambled egg, bacon (thin) & mushrooms) is very very slow. The hotel is well situated but they do need to get their act together.

Building site

The Tivoli Jardim was chosen by my Portuguese colleagues and having checked it out on the net I discovered that it had only reopened last week after a major refurbishment, or at least that was the idea. When I arrived it was clear that the builders were still in. The black tiled lobby area was covered in dusty builder footprints and the sound of hammering etc. was everywhere. When I checked in I was told that none of the smoking rooms were ready yet as only four floors were completed and none of the rooms were smoking, however the rooms come with a balcony so no problem there. When I went to my room it was clear that even the so called completed rooms were nothing of the kind. The peephole in the door was only covered with what looked like chewing gum and what was even more problematic was that the room had no electricity at all. And yes I did stick my card in plug to activate the power but to no avail. I gathered my luggage and went back in the elevator. The elevator comes with numbers and letters so unsure what level was the lobby in Portuguese I thought I play it safe and pressed one and the next couple of letters. The elevator stopped at the first floor and I was greeted by dozens of builders frantically rebuilding the hotel. The door closed and there I was for the next 10 minutes. Nothing was moving, up or down. Eventually the elevator released me on the very same floor. Slightly agitated I made my way across building material back to reception. While waiting I overheard the receptionist telling another guest checking in that the internet was not yet working. Brilliant! On a work trip and no net access. It was clear that this hotel made the colossal mistake of opening too soon to maximise profit at the expense of the paying customers. As the Tivoli group has another hotel 100 yards away (Tivoli Lisboa) I demanded that they check me in there. In fairness to the staff they did not even try to defend the state of the hotel. It was clear that by middle of May 08 this was still a considerable building site, weeks off from completion. When booking the Tivoli Jardim check that their work has been completed and the builders are gone. All I can say that it looked nice and probably has great potential when it is clean, the elevator works and you have electricity and internet access in your room, but only then….
