"Great Hotel in Central Oslo" Posted: Mon, Nov 23 2009

The Opera is a great hotel right next to the Central train station. The hotel is a fairly modern, high rise. There would have been great views over the fjord, from the restaurant floor (3rd) but they are currently building what looks to be a multi-storey car park between the hotel and the water.
The rooms are modern, clean and tidy. The bathroom was clean and in the fully tiled wet-room style. There wasn't a bath but the shower was good.
We only stayed for 1 night and it was mid-week but we didn't have any problems with noise, although we had a room facing into the middle of the building rather than to the street. It was hot in Oslo so we had the bedroom window open and you could just about hear the loudspeaker announcements in the train station, but nowhere near loud enough to keep us awake.
The breakfast was excellent with a huge selection of hot and cold dishes. From bacon and eggs to cold meats and cheese, breads, yoghurts, fruits, teas, coffee and fruit juice and many other items.
The thing that impressed me most, however, was how friendly the Norwegian hotel staff were. They all spoke excellent English (as my Norwegian is rubbish) and they were all genuinely eager to help.
Trips ? I recommend getting the regular ferry from Pier 3 across to the Viking Ship and Folk museums. Both very good, in their own ways.
Everything about our stay as wonderful. The hotel is located right next to the train station--very convenient. The staff was courteous and competent. The room spacious and very quiet. Beds were very comfortable. The breakfast was excellent. My wife and I enjoyed a wonderful one-night stay and only regret that we were not staying longer. If we come back to Oslo this will be our fist choice for a place to stay.
I had a pretty good experience here. The hotel is located right next to the railway station and so is very convenient. Checking in at the large lobby was quick and easy. The room, however, was very small although this was good enough for the short time I was there. A big plus was the fact that it was very well insulated from noise both in and out of the hotel. The breakfast was absolutely fabulous. By shopping around on the web, I got a big discount but, like all Oslo hotels, it was still quite expensive.
Although the hotel itself is fine, it is not situated in the nicest part of town. There are druggies and beggers hanging around in the station and the end of St Johans Gase. It is also close to the immigrant sector - Groenland. The locals call it Pakiland. If this doesn't bother you, you will be able to get a cheap curry there.
If you are coming by Ryanair, the bus station is a short walk from the railway station. Just follow the signs. Look for the South Exit in the railway station. When going back to the airport take care because the bus may not leave on time or from the bay indicated on the screen.
Overall, I can recommend this hotel but ,if you are staying in Oslo for some time, you would do better to choose a hotel away from the station in the western half of Oslo.
