Check in / front desk
8.0
The last 2 reveiwers capture well the amenities and spirit of this local Antwerp institution. It is neither a hostel nor a 2 star hotel but gets the job done. For tourists, the location is a little off the beatten track: it is a good 25 mins walk from the Central Station. Best to take a cab or learn how the tram works. It is about a 8 minute walk from here to the Grote Markt (the main square of Antwerp). It is also around the corner from probably the least threatening 'Red Light' district I have ever seen! I occupied rms 314 and 315 on different nights. My rooms were true college-style dormitory singles. The bathroom was spotless and the TV a welcome amenity. The only variable is that a non-smoking room is not always possible so if you must have one then you will probably be disappointed. The Front Desk was very flexible in allowing me to extend my stay. The only let down was the Lobby internet kiosks which badly need an update since certain sites (like Belgian Rail) didn't load properly. Best to find an internet outpost nearby for better service. The place was (fittingly) overrun with a lot of (mainly Philipino) seamen. I found the prices in the restaurant to be a little high for the basic quality so I would recommend to eat out as much as possible. Restaurant staff, however, were very cherry and polite. The Front Desk staff is very busy, especially during the day so best to have done your homework on where to go, shop, etc. in the greater city of Antwerp. There is even a functioning theater (with performances mainly in Dutch) which adds a nice cultural cache. Overall, a unique style of basic but solid accomodation. Book early since they are usually 80% full.
