Since the 17th century, La Hermida's 3 medicinal springs have been used for therapeutical purposes and in 1880 became a point of reference for thermalism and balneotherapy and the Gran Hotel, the church and new spa chambers were built.

After the Spanish civil war it was abandoned until 2003, when it was fully restored to its former glory. In September 2006 the hotel opened its doors.
