Thorbecke Hotel Amsterdam - Amsterdam, Netherlands 

Couldn't wait to leave in the morning...

We arrived in Amsterdam and went to Booking.com at Schiphol airport to find a hotel. We were told that all hotels were booked up due to a "large gathering" of some kind and there was only one room left in all of Amsterdam - Hotel Thorbecke. The hour was late so we booked the room. We felt that was a total misrepersentation, this was not a hotel, actually a poor hostel, a point that even the desk clerk agreed on. It was beyond overpriced for a 4th story accessable only by a ladder they called stairs! We paid 129 E for a tiny double room with shower and toilet in the hall. Breakfast was included but we had to ask the girl at the desk for plates and to replenish the "breakfast bar". It was old and dirty and not well kept. No employee claimed to have worked there for more than 3 weeks, but they sort of tried to be helpful. Location was fun and funky - little area with plenty of other hotels. Would stay at one of them next trip after researching choices on line. Would never recommend nor return to Thorbecke.

This hotel is a disgrace.Upon arrival you could see it was dirty,dull,and very unplesant to spend a holiday in.Our room was no more than an attic,the wardrobe had no doors on it,the carpet was very old and dirty,our only window was a skylight with ripped curtans,the washbasin had broken tiles,we had no room service for three days,but worst of all was the electrics,very dangrous,the plug wires were exposed,plugs would not fit properly to sockets.The stairs were very steep and dirty,this hotel was the worst Ihave ever stayed in,NEVER NEVER AGAIN oh and forget about breakfast I mean it.Glad to leave this place.

Just returned from a 4 night stay at the Thorbeke hotel. Worst hotel we have ever had the displeasure of staying at Upon entry walking up what felt like Mount everest on an extremely dirty carpet gave us a glipse of things to come. Staying in an allegedly non-smoking room we were greeted with the stench of stale smoke and an ashtray on the table. We payed extra for the privaledge of a 'city view'. Do not take this route as we were greeted with tree branches and nothing more. If there were a city view, we wouldn't have seen much due to the badly cracked window payne We then discovered that the bathroom door handle was broken when it came of in our hand! along with the fact there was no light in there. This took over 2 days to get fixed, after constant badgering. Bedding was not nice. Smelt a bit and the sheets were actually duvet covers with the matresses larger than the bases. Best was yet to come in the form of what can loosly be termed as breakfast. orange juice, tea, an egg, toast and jam. One morning we couldnt even get orange juice. If you want a hot shower in the morning forget it. Even at 9am in the morning there was no hot water for a shower! There was a bedside light that was unable to be pluged in, and the light switch to the main light was a grubby cord Staff were not really that helpful and looked pretty miserable at all times, but then again, so i would i if i had to work there getting numerous complaints each day. All in all a pretty poor show - stayed in much nicer hostels - and would never dare to cross the doorstep of this grotty place again and would definately not recommend to anyone. Gotta be better places in Amsterdam than this!
