The Pickwick Hotel San Francisco address: 85 Fifth Street, San Francisco, 1202

The Pickwick Hotel San Francisco details: Located in downtown San Francisco, the hotel is just one block from the famed Cable Car turnaround, the 9 story San Francisco shopping center (Nordstrom’s), the Bloomingdale's flagship store and Sony Metreon.

The Pickwick Hotel is a historical hotel built in 1926 and has been a landmark since its inception; with its familiar marquee as a fine example of Neo-Gothic architecture.

Daniel Hammett featured the Pickwick Hotel in the classic mystery novel "The Maltese Falcon." The property offers a unique experience blending the very best of old-world elegance with today’s modern amenities.

The Pickwick is an outstanding example of Neo-Gothic Architecture coupled with luxury boutique style. Enter into its grand lobby, with marble floor and sitting area, and you feel like you've entered the Golden Age of Art Deco. With its film-noir-style, seven-story corner sign, the Pickwick hearkens back to the 30s with its focus firmly on the future. Built in 1926, the hotel is a favorite of leisure and business travelers.

The hotel is 100% smoke free.

Location

Union Square is just three blocks from the hotel and is bounded by Powell, Post, Stockton and Geary Streets. The square is one of the top 4 shopping areas by volume in the United States. The square itself is named for a series of pro-Union demonstrations that took place at the beginning of the Civil War.

One block from the Pickwick is the famed San Francisco Cable Car turnaround at the end of Powell St at Market. The Powell-Hyde line will take you through to Chinatown, the Cable Car Museum, past famed Lombard Street northbound to the waterfront, with Fisherman's Wharf to the east and Ghirardelli Square to the west.

Golden Gate Theatre, located just two blocks east of the hotel, is a 2300 seat Beaux Arts Style theatre built in 1922 for the Orpheum circuit. After undergoing a complete renovation in 1979, it has since played host to the "Best of Broadway" national tour, entertaining countless patrons young and old alike.

The Moscone Convention Center, located in the urban heart of downtown district, is San Francisco, California's largest convention center and exhibition hall.

What I loved about the Pickwick: -good size room that was neat & clean -situated near shopping, city transportation to Chinatown & Fisherman's Wharf. One block from trian station. -Helpful staff who arranged for 5am shuttle to SFAirport for $12. -Small resturant & bar in Hotel with good food. What I hated about the Pickwick: -scheduled four nights with confirmed King room but at checkin they only had one room and it went to the person who checked in before me. The desk clerk said she would "upgrade my room at no charge" to a "very good room." It should've, could've, would've been a good room but two elevators where next to the room and all night long they made it very difficult to get any rest. There was obviously no insulation to buffer the noise. You had to get to the point where you just passed out and you didn't need an alarm clock to wake up because the darn thing bing, bing, binged first thing in the morning. -so I thought OK maybe this room surely had a good view...WRONG! Got to see an alley behind the Hotel and the side of a building next door. Some "upgrade" for $200. per night? I was glad I had many things to do and places to go. Still a good location. The place has potential but avoid the "upgrade."

I stayed here with 3 other people for a weekend in August. We loved the hotel. It was very cute and quirky and fit our budget perfectly. I must say, however, the little Italian restaurant that's atttached to the hotel on the first floor wasn't my favorite place, but otherwise the hotel was great. The room was nicely decorated, cute and quaint, and the location, although not GREAT, was still in a good area - walking distance from the business district and all the great shopping! (= I would stay here again.
