Helpful Staff, Outrageous Stairs

I stayed here while on business, and recommend it because the staff was very helpful and friendly, but there are a few things you should be aware of before booking. 1) the building does not have a lift, only stairs, and the stairs are literally straight up, and very narrow. I hear this is common in homes in the Netherlands, so it's probably not just this hotel. 2) it's a bit of a hike from the center of the city, but the tram can drop you close by. 3) the fire alarm went off twice in the night while we were there due to someone taking a shower and the steam set it off.

Disappointing and Noisy

I booked this hotel as it looked very modern, the rooms were not the same as in the picture, just basic but with a nice bathroom. I found it a bit far out from the Red light and Dam square, the stairs were extremely steep. The first night we got there at 9.30pm and had to ring a bell and the man came 5 minutes later on his bike and checked us in, we were at the front of the hotel in the basement so you could hear all the traffic from the road and people in the street, in the morning at around 7.30am you could here all the plates clashing and the breakfast being put out as we were right below the breakfast room and kitchen, then there was lots more noise coming from next door (another kitchen) and we could hear water like a shower against our wall and a lot of banging this went on for over an hour. When we spoke to the reception they said they had a blockage in one of the toilets so the plumber was there to fix this, no compensation given. Would not recommend this hotel as it is hard to find a bit out of the way and too noisy if you get a room at the front or in the basement.

Extremely friendly staff

First impressions were that of the extremely friendly, down-to-earth and helpful staff. After being on a 2 week tour around Europe, service with a smile was something we weren't used to. The room was great, very clean, modern and no-frills. Good views were an added bonus. Location is fantastic, less than 10min to Leidseplein and museums. There were downfalls: very steep stairs, we were lucky that the hotel staff help us carry our 25kg suitcases up and down steep and windy stairs (not for the faint-hearted). As mentioned this is a no-frills hotel so don't expect tea & coffee facilities, no room service or 24hour reception. Which was ok as I did my research an wasn't after 5-star treatment. The hotel is unstaffed after 7pm, but will provide an emergency phone number.
