This is a true 4 star hotel, I would say verging on 5 stars. The staff is exceptional, the facility beautiful and the service couldn't be better. Our room was on the 6th floor, and the hall ways smelled pretty funky, but the room was great. Breakfast was not included in our room, I have to say. We had the buffet our first day, but not much of a value at 25 euros, and I would really suggest any of the fabulous little street cafes for breakfast over the hotel's (unless you get it thrown in like the other post). The internet was fast and reliable, and included in the price. I did take a look at the fitness room, and it was very nice. The location is a bit off the main road, and a bit rough at night, but in very easy walking distance from everything you want to see.

the first room had windows looking over the inside of the hotel, on the lobby and reception area. It was like beeing in the "big brother" show or worst in a prison. Very, very unconfortable. Hotel staff was very kind and change our room straight away. Rooms are very nicely furnished but old and not as big as you would expect from a five star hotel. The room description when we booked did not mention clearly that breakfast was not included. It was a real disappointment being told that to have breakfast the additional rate was 20 euro per person per day. Nice location and professional staff.

The hotel is in an excellent location, close to city centre but in a quiet position, with good choice of cafes and restaurants nearby. The room was spacious and well appointed and reception staff helpful. Meals at the hotel are expensive and I would advise anyone to eat out nearby. Two comments I would make are first about the heating - we stayed at New Year and the heating in the room was not left on before we arrived and radiators not fully turned on till the third day, so the room could have been warmer - and the second is lighting, rooms have very high ceilings and there is no overhead light so light in the room is patchy. If both these points were rectified I would give the hotel an overall 9 out of 10 rating.

Good
Perfect location but annoying details

Excellent location in the city core (Rusland St.), within short walking distance to Dam, Muziektheater and Red Light District. Stryking architecture, large interior courtyard with full height atrium, the bar is housed in an old Dutch style townhouse embedded in the hotel.

The annoying details: the bathroom threshold in my room (415) was very high, practically an accident waiting to happen. The Grohe sink faucet was showing its age, for E300/night (the so called "deluxe" room) one expects better. The bathtub is narrow, they could use the curved shower curtain bars available in any mid-range american hotels. The fluorescent lighting in the bathroom, elegantly hidden, flutters wildly for a good 5 seconds before actually turning on. The gym (compact but functional, hidden in the basement) closes too early at 10pm. The breakfast (at E25) is very good but not exceptional, fruit selection is sub-par.

Nice touches: umbrellas available at the concierge (a must have item in Amsterdam), freshly squeezed orange juice at breakfast.

The hotel can be hard to find by car if one is not familiar with the city, even with GPS assistance. It's best to call for directions.

Highly recommended for location and personality (but watch your step in the bathroom!)
