Sphinx Hotel - Amsterdam, Netherlands

I was initially nervous to stay in such a cheap hotel, but as a student there was not a lot of choice, but I was pleasantly surprised by the Sphinx. I stayed with my friend and booked a twin shower room, we got a big six bed room with toilet and shower as well as a small step out balcony that was s nice surprise! The rooms are clean enough and towels are changed daily. It is noisy however, and if you're a light sleeper definitely bring earplugs! The only other niggle is that the power sockets in the room were about 6ft up the wall behind the tv, so me and my 5ft mate had to stand on chairs to use hairdryers and such. The staff were fine, let you get on with it and help if they can, so all in all not bad at all!

Horrible run down dump,over priced,didn't get a double bed that we booked,our friends were placed on the ground floor while we had to go up 3 flights of stairs,staff didn't even offer to help us up these stairs,didn't get toilet that we booked for our room,had to use communal toilet which had grafitti over it,don't blame the artists!,carpets were disgusting,walls were mouldy,breakfast was a joke.bread and cheap diluting juice,had to pay a deposit for our room key!staff walked into our room in the morning 3 times.they used our room to gain access to electricity point for hoover,hot water ran out after 10,so being on holiday you had to do without a ly in.we had cold water for a shower!asked if we could have a drink of water around 11pm and the guy behind the desk says 'yes water is good' and stared at us like we were cows.decor was from the 1950's.lights were broken,noise above our room sounded like trainers being washed in a washing machine - this went on the whole time we were there.towels had holes in them.Over priced and glorified hostel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This hotel was the cheapest I could find in Amsterdam. Was nice enough room - clean and tidy. Good transport links, near to heineken museum and bars such as Hard Rock Cafe. Just be warned the stairs to the rooms ar every steep, and no lifts. Would stay again for a cheap few days
