We held our daughter's wedding reception at the Langley in May 2008. We had some nervous moments in the two weeks immediately prior to the event, when we were unable to get a response to our questions as we tried to resolve final details such as table layout, etc.
However once we arrived at the hotel, the staff were fantastic, very friendly and did everything possible to make the day go well; which it did.
When you arrive at the Langley, the decaying window frames to the older part of the building frontage do not give a good first impression. Some of the bedrooms are in need of redecoration and some care and attention. The bridal suite which my daughter used has an en-suite bathroom with a sunken bath but as with some of the other rooms looked a bit past its best.
The main event room which opens out from the hotel restaurant was well presented and was ideal for our reception. Unfortunately on our day it was raining, but in better weather, there is a pleasant patio and garden area that people could spill out onto. We had a meal for 70 guests with as many again turning up in the evening. There was plenty of room to sit this many guests and I would think they could cater for quite a few more. A dance floor was laid once the meal had been completed and some of the tables moved. The food was very good without being cordon bleu. One slight criticism is that there was a period during the meal when wine glasses were not topped up and I found myself with an empty glass. There was meant to be half a bottle of wine per person. Bearing in mind not everybody would have been drinking, I can't think we had this much served.
The bridal suite had fresh flowers and fruit and in the evening champagne and strawberries were waiting.
Overall this was a very good venue for my daughter's reception and we would certainly recommend it to others provided they can accept the possibility of slightly tired looking bedrooms.

The first impession you get when you arrive is "is this the same place as in the brochure ?" as it looked quite run down when we arrived.
Attended a friends wedding which to be fair did go very well. The staff are very helpful......however......Some of the rooms are very tired and some of the double beds are on the small side. Our shaver socket did not work and there was no plug in the sink. There were a measly 4 cloths hangers in the cupboard and the room reeked of cigarettes. It was above the bar which was very noisy. Staff make no effort to quieten people down. Even at 3am. Managed to change room by helpful receptionist but new room also stank of cigarettes as well. If you dont have an electric shower in your room you have to have a bath as the shower mixers are very difficult to control. Its either scalding or freezing. Most of the outside front window frames are rotton or flaking paint making it look a bit run down which was disapointing as the brochures look lovely.
Lazy maintainace people paint on top of paint leaving doors frames looking scruffy.
The corridor leading to the toilet next to the bar reeks of toilet duck/toilet cleaner.
Dining room is also tired. UPVC windows could do with a spring clean as they are filthy. The main banister up to the first floor from reception wobbles if you hold it to walk up. Disabled people beware or use the lift which has some of the floor buttons missing.
Buffet breakfast had a good variety but get there early as you have to order your eggs scrambled/fried which take15-20 minutes to arrive by which time all the bacon had been taken and they dont offer any more..even if you ask nicely..apparantly the chef says there is no more. (on both days we stayed).
The swing chairs in the garden are dangerous as they are rotton and falling to pieces so dont sit on them.
To top it off we were overcharged for our room and had to fish out our booking reference letter with discount which we had the foresight to bring along.
All of my critisisms are clear to see in this hotel which has seen far better days. How they get away with the bannister situation in todays health and safety concious society is beyond me..!
