"Great hotel"

I'm just back from a three night stay at the Donima Inn Riga and found my whole experience of the hotel to be great. The room was very modern, bigger than many twins I've stayed in at other hotels and the bathroom was new and spacious. I found the staff to be very courteous and helpful regardless of the time of day. The location was ideal as well - a pleasant 10-15 minute walk to the old town which took us through a couple of parks and along the side of the canal. There's also a coffee shop and supermarket next door which proved handy.

I got a real deal compared to the rack rate. This is a classy hotel; it's listed in the guide books as moderate. I would put it up a class. Very new and modern. FABULOUS buffet breakfast with several stations and a big circular table. Very large dining area. Bright and cheerful. (During the day the breakfast "room" is an expensive restaurant.) Great bed, great bathroom -- loved the shower. Strangely, there was no luggage rack. Pretty much every other amenity you could wish for. Negatives for me were: I couldn't stand the music playing in the lobby/atrium area -- loud, upbeat, I can't even classify it as to style but it was very annoying. One negative which is also a positive is the location NOT being in the old town. It's a brisk 20 minute walk through the park. Good part is that you miss the street noise at night. The best part about the location is that it's right around the corner from Vincent, my favorite up-scale restaurant (go for the fixed price lunch -- much cheaper but same elegant cuisine). This is also the neighborhood of the most Art Nouveau buildings and they are spectacular.

Landmarks and attractive features in the hotel area. The area now is the most prestigious and prosperous in the great city of Riga. It is full of excellent Art Nouveau buildings, most of them beautifully renovated, some of the best ones occupied by embassies. Nearby is the great semicircle of parks with beautiful landscaping and particularly noteworthy flower gardens. Two minutes walk from the hotel is the ``Vincent'' restaurant, reputed to be the best in Riga. Our meal there was certainly memorable. The restaurant in the hotel, while not exactly at the same level, is excellent too. There is also a plethora of less formal places offering simpler and less expensive food, and, most interestingly, glimpses into the local social scene. Particularly remarkable and touching for a visiting Russian speaker are companies of young evidently prosperous Riga Russians (65% of the city population are Russian speakers), relaxed and dignified, real Europeans in the best sense of the word, lacking any traces of vulgarity and self-consciousness, which are noticeable even among the best specimens of that kind in Moscow.
