Grand Prince Kyoto details:
With its oval shaped design by famed architect Togo Murano, the Grand Prince Hotel Kyoto, Japan, rests below the Kyoto Mountains. The hotel sits next to the Kyoto International Conference Hall and four kilometers from Takaragaike Park. Surrounded by trees, hills and rivers, the area is most attractive in the fall, although the hotel attracts year round visitors who enjoy its large business facilities and impressive architecture.
The Grand Prince Hotel Kyoto houses an authentic Sukiya style teahouse in a sculptured Japanese garden. Business guests can book the space to entertain clients and hold special meetings, or travelers can enjoy lunch and dinner in its elegant atmosphere. The hotel features seven banquet rooms in total, including Prince Hall, which seats up to 1,400 guests.
Guests can visit one of the hotel's six restaurants and lounges, including the refined and quiet Tohen Chinese Restaurant and the tasty Washoku Japanese Restaurant. The Lobby Lounge offers cakes, coffee and tea with views of the garden, and the well stocked Main Bar provides a cozy and intimate environment.
The eight story Grand Prince Hotel Kyoto contains 322 guestrooms and 23 suites that boast views of Mount Hiei. All offer high speed Internet access, coffeemakers, satellite television, refrigerators, bathrobes, complimentary toiletries and complimentary newspapers.

We stayed at the hotel for 3 nights and had a good experience. The rooms were fairly big. We had two small children traveling with us and the hallway and bedroom area were pretty well divided, so we could move around without waking them up. The grounds are very pretty and nice to stroll around. If you are visiting for the conference center, it is the ideal location, but if you are going to visit the main attractions in Kyoto, the hotel is quite far. The subway is only a five-minute walk from the hotel, but it takes about 30 mins to get to the Central Kyoto Station.
Room service was a little exorbitant. My husband went to the restaurant to get a cup of milk and we were charged $6, along with service room fees.
We did not find any convenience stores close by, so if we did not get what we needed at downtown Kyoto, we had to buy from the hotel.
They also offer a shuttle service from the Central station, but you need to call in advance as times are limited and mostly offered over the weekend. They will pick up and deliver luggage from the hotel to the central station, which was a nice bonus.

There are no ice machines on the floors, and room service charged us $6 for a small bucket of ice. Need I say more?
The other reviews have described it pretty well. Big rooms, attentive staff, accessible by subway from Kyoto Station, etc.
This is clearly a hotel that is fully oriented to service the convention center's clientele, i.e. business people on expense accounts who won't be too concerned with paying extra for services. We were there on a weekend night during Golden Week, and they were far from full. They should offer some deep discounts for weekend nights to increase occupancy and compensate for their relatively inconvenient location.
As tourists, we were able to get around Kyoto from subway/bus terminal near the hotel without much trouble, but there are many other hotels that are much closer in to the major tourist destinations.
Bottom line, only stay here if you are attending some event at the convention center (or unless they start offering some deep weekend tourist discounts).
