Initially I booked to stay in the Hostal Castilla II, but was informed that we were being moved to Hostal Castilla I on the day of our arrival. They had sent an email to me 18 hours before my arrival informing me of this which was very short notice. Arrived at the hostal to find the man at reception could not speak english. The room was tiny and extremely dark, the bathroom was also very small. The furniture was sparse and the double bed was extremely small. The noise in this hostel was unbearable. We had to go for a few drinks before attempting to fall asleep only to be woken again at 5.30AM to what sounded like a herd of cattle going up and down the stairs. Area around the hotel seemed quite badly lit and may be unsafe at night-time. Decided to check out the next day and relocate, found it very difficult to communicate this to the lady on the desk as she also had no english. Would definetely not recommend thei hostel.

This is a neat little hostal that is very well located (a few steps from Plaza de Santa Ana and a 10 minute walk from Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor). The place is cozy but very clean, and the owners are very friendly. You'll love your stay if you don't mind the noise. All rooms give on an interior court, that is extremely echo, and you hear absolutely everything that happens in the hallways and think the phone ringing at the reception area is actually in your room. If you are there to party and don't mind the noise, you'll love the place, but if your sleep is important to you, perhaps think of another place.
