We spent a lovely two nights at the Columbus. As far as we are concerned it is a four star hotel at very reasonable 3 star price. The reception staff were welcoming and helpful and our room was spacious and clean with a large balcony overlooking the town and hills beyond. We did not try the restaurant as we wanted to try the restaurants in Bolsena town. There was a good choice at breakfast include freshly soft boiled eggs, the biggest fresh croissants we have ever seen and fresh coffee made exactly as you want it. Although most rooms do not overlook the lake, it is just a step outside.

The rooms we were offered at this hotel were scruffy and bore no resemblance to the photos on this website!! We booked this hotel based on the information contained on the Venere Web site. We arrived at the hotel on 26th September 2008 and was given a room on the first floor, the first room we were given had a smell of cigarettes and bore no resemblance to photo's! we asked for an alternate room, this did not smell of cigarettes but still bore no resemblance to the website photos. Both rooms were scruffy and well worn!. We ended up upgrading to sister hotel over the road at additional cost to ourselves Reading the other reviews we may have had bad luck and were offered rooms that had not been refurbished yet. Either way we were not offered what is advertised on this website.

From the moment of booking untill the moment of check out, all perfect. Employees are friendly and helpfull. Never had a hotelroom as spacious like this, perfect and clean. Breakfast is not that variating if you stay too long. Airco works very well. Car parking and swimming pool at Hotel Royal are very nice. ( free to use ). In October I have to be in Bolsena and I will definately book a room at Hotel Columbus. On the other hand, we stayed for 4 days and that's enough because in the surroundings is not that much amusement for young children.

Welcoming hotel in an excellent position. There was secure parking at the sister hotel over the road, there was also a great pool area at this sister hotel which we enjoyed using. Bolsena is a great split between the lake side region with plenty of bars, restaurants and beach style cafes and then there is the old town with a castle topping the hill. This area has some good restaurants which were all friendly and well priced ( much better value than the Chianti region!). If you can time your stay with some festive event in the town it makes your stay even more enjoyable. For those who want to walk at the side of the lake it has the advantage of plenty of seating at regular intervals and also feels like you're at the sea side. We stayed mid July, could a later period be full of campers and other tourists? There are big car parks that were empty at this time!. A great base to get to see Orvieto which is only 1/2 hour away.

Suitable for adults who want peace and quiet. Neither hotel nor location ideal for children. VERY helpful receptionists and everyone spoke or understood English. Food quite good on half board but breakfasts were a bit boring: always the same food  and always pesented in the same way. Plenty of it though. Good decor. Showers too small and the shower head was fixed to the wall so your hair got wet every time. We were there 8 nights and only discovered a couple of days before we left that we could use the pool in the sister hotel over the road - pity. Secure car parking. The town itself is brilliant: clean and full of flowers. Seems a safe place. No rowdiness and as far as I could see, not much in the way of fun that would encourage the young there. There is plenty of shade from hundreds of tall old plane trees. Really impressive. The hotel has a pleasant terrace. Generally there is a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere.
