Sofitel Roma, is a great hotel in a very good northern location near to the Borghese Park, and 5 mins walk to the Spanish Steps and the shopping, bars and restaurants that surround that area.
Rooms are very comfortable with fab aircon (which you'll need after a hot days shopping and sightseeing) lovely power shower and bathroom facilities and big comfy beds. The hotel was very quiet and located perfectly for our stay just be prepared for a lot of walking and hill climbing, and most nights after dinner you'll need to conserve energy for the climb up the spanish steps back to the hotel!
The best thing about the hotel is its walkable to almost all the major sights (colluseum/palatine hill 20-25mins, spanish steps 5mins, pantheon and piazza navona 15-20 mins, piazza del popolo 10mins) The only time we used the metro was to go to st peters and it was super efficient and only 1euro. (the nearest stop is at the top of the spanish steps)
After a long day exploring rome go up to the roof terrace and enjoy the amazing views over the city (you can see st peters, castel st angelo, the roof of the pantheon, villa medici etc etc)
Drinks and food are very expensive and the one thing that let this hotel down, (although we did treat ourselves to a cocktail before we went out for diner each night to soak in the views but ?25 for 2 drinks eeeeeek)
If you want cheap drinks and snacks Bar Lembo is just down the road from the hotel on the way to the spanish steps and does bottled water, coke, beer etc and delicious panninis for quick bites!
We would definately return to the Sofitel Roma! the staff are exceptional, very accommodating and helpful.

My family (me, my husband, and 5 children aged 6-12) stayed at the Sofitel Roma for 2 nights. I had contacted the hotel by email because their website would not let me reserve only 3 rooms for 7 people. I received a very prompt email in return that same day saying that it woul be no problem and that they would have 2 connecting rooms and a triple room on the same floor for us. The manager I dealt with was wonderful and accomodating. We ended up needing the rooms a day earlier than planned at the last minute. Another almost immediate email told us that it would be no problem.
When we arrived in Rome from Sicily, we thought it would be great to take the express train to the Termini station and take the metro to the Spanish Steps and walk to the hotel from there. We only had carry-on luggage, so we did not think it would a problem. However, the map of Rome that we had did not show that you cannot get to the street we wanted without climbing the Spanish Steps, which we were not about to do. So we had to go about 7 blocks (at least 4 straight uphill) to reach the hotel. As we made it up to the front door, a lovely doorman come rushing to our rescue. Luigi quickly took our bags, found chairs for the kids, and directed us to the front desk. He even fanned me off with my map. We were hooked from that point on. The rooms were beautiful and large which was a pleasant surprise. Great bathrooms and Hermes toiletries (great shampooo). It is also very quiet at night - we did not even know anyone else was in the hotel.
The crowning glory of the hotel, however, has got to be the Terrace. On the top floor is an open terrace with couches and bar tables that overlooks the entire city. It is breathtaking. They have an extensive drink menu and serve appetizers, entrees and desserts. There is even a telescope if you want a better view.
I was impressed with every aspect of the hotel and will hopefully have the chance to return.
