Just got back from Rome and stayed at the Sunshine House. Paid about $55 a night in November for a room with a shared bathroom. It's right by the train station and you can walk pretty much to the major sites in Rome. The neighborhood looks a bit dodgy though but since it's right next to the train station, I suppose travelers are a common site.

Pros - Hotel was quiet. Sheets and towels were clean. Room had a safe in it (free of charge). Central location. Shower had hot water - vacillated from nice and hot to lukewarm but was overall tolerable ie - not ice cold. Remote for the TV.

Cons - Hard to find people that work there - don't expect much service - very basic. TV reception was terrible. Could watch the programs but most channels had interference. The doors to the rooms didn't look very sturdy (but there was a safe in the room). Credit card machine was broken...had to pay cash.

The old man that works at the counter has an edge to him and is extremely crotchety but overall harmless (and not very helpful). I saw him give the shrugged shoulders and the "no English" explanation to other travelers with issues. So don't expect much. Amazingly, his English improved when we talked about paying for the room.

Overall, compared to what other low-budget hotels were charging in Rome, this was a decent deal. No major problems in the hotel and overall it was a good and clean place to sleep. If you're a traveler on a budget, it's an OK place to stay in Rome - clean and cheap.
