Hotel della Fortezza - Sorano, Italy 

This property is a gem in a little village not immediately known for its tourism. LOCATION: The entrance is actually from the main road of Sorano. Try to get exact directions from the hotel as it is not sign-posted. You need to drive up a long cobbled drive-way, small cars are best suited to get up to the hotel easily, as there are a few tight turns required. Parking is at the top of the hill next to the Fortezza. PROPERTY: This is a renovated fortress. The outdoor areas look quite original, however certain parts of the courtyard are in need of repair, so be careful underfoot! Inside the property everything is decorated in dark wood and cream colours. Furnishings are elegant and tasteful. Our room overlooked the clock-tower and the old town below us - fantastic sweeping views from the shuttered window. The room was compact but had a high ceiling, a feature exploited by the design - the bedroom is on the mezzanine level. Possible problem with that is that it's very hot in summer. Buffet breakfast was good quality and sufficient for a busy day of driving around Tuscany STAFF: Pleasant and helpful. Limited English... but so is my Italian, so we got on just fine.
