Location
Montecatini is the European capital of Thermal spas. The town was developed in the 19th century, with the name Bagni di Montecatini. The town grew rapidly around its precious resource: its spa waters. In 1928 the town took on its current name, Montecatini Terme and was already famous throughout Europe for its thermal spa water and for its beauty. To date, the sights that the visitors see is superb: 460,000 square meters of park in the town centre surround and embellish the splendid thermal spa buildings, that were entirely built in the classical Liberty style.
As a resort, the town offers everything that guests can desire for an unforgettable holiday. There are several opportunities for shopping, thanks to the several shops located in the town centre streets and the fact that they open on Sundays, something that was introduced in Tuscany for the first time in Montecatini Terme. For traditional lovers, the town also offers the possibility of visiting the characteristic Mercatino del Grocco, the market that is always open in high season and which is considered to be the second most important in Tuscany after the San Lorenzo in Florence.
Rooms
The hotel has 80 bedrooms. The rooms are spread out over five floors and are all excellently furnished and decorated, with modern, functional bathrooms.
Each room has a safe, a mini-bar, a direct telephone line, satellite television and individually-controlled air conditioning.
The rooms have been designed to meet every need. There are the luxurious, exclusive rooms for the most sophisticated tastes, intimate, welcoming rooms for anyone who loves moderation and practicality. The attic rooms on the top floor provide a warm, familiar atmosphere, letting you touch the sky with your hands. There are also rooms decorated in nineteenth-century style, for those who love taking an imaginary trip into the past.

We booked this as a late availability holiday, having loved Montecatini Terme when we visited last year. We were a bit apprehensive as to what awaited after reading some reviews, but for us (and I think it helps staying for a week plus in one place as I suspect we got good treatment, perhaps better than the many 2 or 3 nighters on coach tours the hotel was full of), we were very happy with this hotel for what it cost. us-(Just over ?20 each per night B and B). In the end it would be unrealistic to expect better for the money is how I view it.
The rooms were a bit old fashioned but spacious, the bathrooms were spotless but chipped here and there. The bed was comfy. Sheets and towels changed regularly though not daily. Doors out onto a roof terrace. The fridge and safe without any extra costs. Well functioning air conditioning. The pool was shallow but had fantastic views and was deserted most days and great for cooling off in.Take your own pool towel or hire one for 5 euros for your stay. The staff were lovely. Friendly, smiling, helpful.
The breakfast wasn't the best we have ever had in a 4* hotel but fresh and adequate -bread, jams, croissants, cake, one type of cheese, cooked meat and cold hard boiled eggs, fruit (fantastic kiwi)and tinned fruit salad, natural yogurt and cereals. Hot drinks and very dilute juices and water. Lots of space inside and out to socialise, enjoy a drink, play cards, relax with a book. The garden around the hotel- sweet smelling shrubs and attractive. A short walk from the station so transfer from Pisa only 4 euro's each which is amazing value in my book. Montecatini is a great base -lots of activities in the evenings, nice people watching place, parkland, cycle opportunities, the spas. Lucca , Florence, Pisa etc all cheap train jourey away. In my view you could do far worse if on a budget.

Montecatini is a delightful place and I would certainly go back again. However, I would not return to the Imperial Garden. The room was extremely small and the bathroom was absolutely tiny. The furniture was bashed up. There was no dressing table, just an old bureau. The food is terrible. I couldn't find anything to eat at breakfast - it was stale breadrolls and cake. The evening meal included tinned vegetables. The dining room reminded me of an old peoples' home. The staff are not helpful, other than one young woman who served drinks.
