3We visited the Scaletta last year and I gave it ten out of ten which was perhaps slightly over generous due to being overwhelmed by Florence and the views from the terrace.
All these factors still obviously apply but with two qualifications.
The hotel is non-smoking and this should in fairness be made clear in publicity.
The staff cover the entire spectrum from friendly through cool efficiency to appalling rudeness and incompetence. The breakfast staff offer extras to Italians and treat English speakers with barely disguised contempt and distain. If you are a non-smoking Italian it is a great hotel. If, however, you are English (speaking)buyer beware, either develop a thick skin or attempt to see it as an Italian Fawlty Towers. The hotel is very good of its type and I am sad that I will never be going back there.
