Turmhotel Solingen - Solingen, Germany 

Turmhotel translates as Tower Hotel and the height is really the only thing this hotel has going for it. The reception is on the 11th floor, with the floors below occupied by professional offices. You need to press a buzzer at ground level to be allowed to catch the lift up to the reception which is filled with smoke as the receptionist was smoking a cigarette when we walked in. The lifts are clunky and old and seem to take a lifetime to arrive. We were given a room on the 14th floor with a corner view - no balcony only windows. Everything was so old - the bed, the desk, the TV and the curtains. One of the blinds didn't work and neither did one of the heaters. We specifically requested a no smoking room and while our hallway had no smoking signs in it, it was obvious that previous guests had disregarded this. We were told that wireless internet was available but we couldn't get our computer to connect. Parking was 4 Euro per night underneath the hotel. The hotel is quite centrally located, just off the main square and really easy to find. I wouldn't really recommend going to Solingen and I wouldn't advocate this hotel at all - try something boutique and smaller if travelling through this town.
