Stayed here on business. My well traveled colleague had been to the hotel before and his heart sank when he learned where we were staying.
There have been some efforts to refurbish and modernise but new fittings do not disguise the wider problems associated with an old building. Noisy, lift was broken, very stuffy, peculiar smells, strange room sizes and layouts (my room was massive, others were tiny). The hot water failed so we all had cold showers.
They messed up our bookings - three of us were staying and our rooms were booked together and the rooms should have been paid in advance. I was told my bill hadn't been paid and I had to pay on checkout, my first colleague was told she had to pay but was later refunded and my second colleague was told the bill was already paid and she wasn't asked to pay - and we all dealt with the same receptionist!!
If I have to stay here in the future my heart will sink as well.

parking to the rear was free until recently - now ?5 per day.
good location from station (4 minute walk).
check in is straight forward.
rooms are good - decent choice of tv channels.
fully stocked with shampoo and tea/coffee.
basement restaurant is expensive, as are drinks (over ?3.50 for a pint of diet pepsi).
breakfast is ok - nothing special. some items seem fresher than others.
expensive restaurant and bar let the side down from being given a 4 star rating - no value at all.
if you can, book into hotel but eat elsewhere in town centre, plenty of choice. currently road works on going around hotel which makes car park access dificult. Also street works near by in town centre which have been on going for a while now.
