I have just spent the weekend at the Westwood Country Hotel, Oxford, with a group of friends and would say that our overall experience was extremely good. My room (number 1) was very light and airy with large windows on two sides. It was occupied as a single but had a comfortable double bed. The bathroom appeared new and was spotlessly clean with a good shower and bath. I had a flat screen portable TV and coffee making facilities. The room was clean and well presented.
The property is a large Edwadian house with a nice terrace area and garden of mainly lawn. There are comfortable lounges and a very pleasant modern bar area. We ate in the hotel restaurant and had a variety of dishes from the fairly small selection. All were well cooked and perfectly good.
The staff were very good. Friendly reception, helpful manager and friendly and efficient staff in the restaurant.
In order to get into Oxford, there is a bus stop with a half hourly servive about 200 yards away. Alternatively, there is a park & ride on the hotel side of the city. A taxi from Oxford Station cost ?11. It is about 3 miles.
I suspect that the hotel may not be quite so good for non wedding guests if it wascatering for a wedding on a weekend. There was no wedding when we visited and it may be best to check this in advance.
I was surprised to see some negative comments on the site and maybe other rooms vary but I can only comment that my own and the others in the group all had good rooms ( numbers 1,2 and 5). One couple brought a toddler with them and they were happy with the hotel and arrangements.
There is plenty of parking.

We joined this hotel for New Years Eve and stayed the one night. First impressions where good. Good parking and friendly receptionist, But it all went down hill from there. We where on the 2nd floor. The first flight of stairs was fine, and then you go through a very heavy fire door and up a steep narrow staircase. Room for only one medium build person and a small case to go up. Our room was in the eves of the house and we both managed to bump our heads in the bathroom. The water tricked out of the shower so I gave up on that. .It was however functional and clean. The rooms on the 1st floor where easily accessible and nice. So perhaps we where just unlucky.
Well the food was well meaning that's all I can say. I personally tried a mouth full of each course and the rest always hoping that the next dish would be better. It was not. The vegetarian’s food was cold and had to be re-heated. The nice receptionist was also our waitress.
The only wine for sale was from Argentina Vintage 2006 or was it 2007? . We had to request to see the manager before we were allowed to buy anything else. Apparently they did not have much wine in stock so instead of offering what was left in the cellar they decided it would be simpler only to sell the Argentinean 2006! We eventually managed to persuade him to sell us some slightly more expensive bottles. I think the conversation ended, Please take some money we can afford it! We have bought your New Years Eve tickets we have paid to stay the night! Please just find us something half decent to drink with our meal.
The DJ had to be persuaded that since there was no one in the room under 30 that perhaps Techno and rap was not quite right for his audience on New Year’s Eve. From 12.30 onwards the music in the Bar was also Rap and Garage. Not surprisingly the guests all had an early night. Just as well as we all had to get up for breakfast as most people where hungry.
The dining room did have a stunning view over the woods which were lovely to see in the morning sunlight. Beware of the morning coffee from the coffee urn in the dining room unless you like treacle. At no time during the morning could you even buy a cappuccino or latte because the coffee machine was" switched of". Again they just would not take our money!
It only took three quarters of an hour to check out such was the queue. We appreciated our waitress/receptionist who bought some sense to a surreal experience.
A friend who did not join in the great good wine hunt said. A bit Smelly from travelling and no shower--dazed from hitting my head.-hungry,- a headache from poor wine,-ears pounding from loud garage music in the bar and finally stomach ripped our by very strong coffee.
We all did have a nice time because we where in the company of a large group of good friends. However if you ask me would I stay again, and then No, I don’t think so Every time we hear the words country house hotel now we both shudder.
