Location

Paphos (or Pafos) is one of the most beautiful and ancient towns of Cyprus. Wherever one treads in Paphos he comes across its glorious history which dates back thousands of years, when the cult of goddess Aphrodite who emerged from its seas, flourished in this beautiful part of the world attracting many visitors from the island and abroad.
Today Paphos is a small harbour town, but in Hellenistic and Roman times it was the capital of Cyprus. Still under the spell of her Beauty-Goddess, the area retaining her magic, has remained impact by time. Paphos seduces its visitor with its majestic landscape, lovely coastline, historical treasures and delightful villages where tradition is still a way of life.
The legacy from its remarkable history adds up to nothing less than an open museum, so much so that UNESCO simply added the whole town its world Cultural Heritage List. Among the treasures unearthed, are the remarkable mosaics in the Houses of Dionyssos, Theseus and Aion, beautifully preserved after 16 centuries under the soil. Then there are the mysterious vaults and caves, the Tombs of the Kings, the ancient Odeon Theatre and other places of interest including the various Museums.

I have just come back from the Venus Beach Hotel and was pleasantly surprised. Having read reviews on this website, I expected the hotel to be terrible. However, my experience has proved most of the negative comments to be incorrect. The hotel was lovely - very clean and tidy. Granted, the bedrooms were a bit small and probably no better than those in a British budget hotel. However, the evening entertainment was excellent for families, with activities including bingo, quiz night and Cypriot dancing. The food was very good with a lot of choice, but I wasn't sure on the bacon at breakfast!! Plenty of fruit available, with lovely Greek yoghurt. The pool area was beautiful, very clean and the pool itself was very refreshing, if somewhat warm due to our very hot weather! The hotel staff were always very attentive, helpful and friendly. The beds were comfortable, but the bathrooms were quite small and in my view, were probably the worst part of the hotel. The TV was fine, providing more than enough entertainment (we don't go on holiday to watch TV all day)!! To sum up, I think that the Venus Beach Hotel was very good. They have great facilities, including a gym and two tennis courts with floodlights. It probably isn't five star, but on reflection not far off for an overseas hotel. Don't listen to the negative reviews because we have had a lovely holiday and are thinking about returning soon!! A very relaxing environment.
