3We loved Hotel Phoenix! As other reviewers have said, the Phoenix is more of a B&B than a hotel. If you're not into the B&B scene you shouldn't consider staying here. That said, this is a truly wonderful little place with the most amazing service. It's expensive, but so is everything else in Iceland. It is absolutely worth the cost!
The proprietors really went out of their way to make sure we had a perfect time in Reykjavik. Upon our arrival (and every evening!) they offered us a glass of sherry, answered questions, and told us all about the city and the country. They can also book excursions, make dinner reservations, etc.
The rooms were spotlessly clean, spacious and nicely decorated (though not particularly my taste). The double bed is 2 single beds pushed together, which is not ideal but seems typical here. The buffet breakfast included breads, juice, cold cuts, yogurt, cereal and fruit – all of which were very tasty!
The location is far enough from the center of town that it is quiet, but still a very short walk from all the activity in the city (restaurants, bars, sites). It's also close to public transportation which is convenient if you're going out to the city museum or to Kringlan for some shopping.
We can't say enough nice things about our wonderful hosts at Hotel Phoenix, and can't wait to go back!
