Great Hotel, Perfectly Situated in the heart of the city Posted: Wed, Jul 16 2008
Stayed here for three nights when we came for a concert in the summer 06. Having read some of the other reviews here, we had a slightly different experience. We had a room in the back of the building, so we did not have a problem with any noise from the square at all. The back of this hotel mainly faces a residential neighborhood, and the only issue we had was being woke up at 4am one morning by three drunk teenagers playing rugby with someone's patio chair-something that could happen anywhere. The room was clean, and the bed comfortable. That being said, we were in one of the rooms where the ceiling has a pretty severe slope above the bed, so we constantly bumped our heads getting in and out of bed. We laughed about it everytime there was a "thud" in the room, but I could see this being irritating for some people. The hotel's location is great, being directly in the center of town and easy walk to loads of restaurants, shops, bars, etc. As other people have mentioned the noisy square, the square is located right in front of this hotel, and it seems that all of the city's teens and pub-going crowd likes to hang out there-late. I would recommend that anyone ask for a room on the other side of the hotel if you feel that noise may be an issue for you. The good thing is the square is home to loads of places to get food/drink/coffee, and there is a very good pizza shop in the square to your immediate right as you exit the hotel lobby. There's also a tourist office to the left that books trips and excursions which we didn't use, but some friends used them for their blue lagoon trip, which worked out fine. We originally wanted to stay a The Borg, but it was fully booked so we ended up here. When I return I will probably try to stay at The Borg as it looked a bit nicer inside, but I wouldn't have a problem returning to this hotel again.
We stayed here for two nights. Finding the hotel can be a bit difficult if you're driving yourself, and so is parking. We ended up parking at a metered space in a residential area to the west of the hotel.
The room itself was nice. We were in a second building, which required a circuitous route from the lobby -- up to the 3rd floor, across a connecting bridge, and down to the 1st floor.
The twin beds were comfortable. The windows had heavy shades that were able to darken the room well. This is important in the summer as it never really gets dark outside at night.
The TV and wired internet worked okay, though the set-top box for the TV was a bit confusing to use. It also has to be plugged in for the internet to work.
The main problem I had was noise. Some other reviews have also mentioned this -- aircraft noise from the in-town airport and street noise. However, this wing actually operates some sort of club in the basement on the weekends which I thought was a bit much. It could have been worse -- they weren't playing loud music, but there was a lot of yelling and banging around all night long right below us.
