We stayed for two nights in Dublins` Browns hotel in July 2008.
We booked Browns after searching for a double ensuite room in the centre of Dublin. we read the description, "a boutique hotel with en suite, "bedroom furniture tastefully compliments the period town house" There was also a description of the elegant georgian front door. The hotel brochure showed a photograph of a beautiful georgian entrance surrounded by green foilage.
When we arrived at the hotel we were checked in by a friendly young lady and were informed our room was on the fifth floor. The reception area was next to the restaurant and was decorated to a good standard. To access the stairs to our room(No Lift) we had to enter the stairway through a locked door, when we entered the stairway the similarity to the brochure ended, the stairs were narrow and poorly decorated, when we got to the fifth floor the room was directly at the top of the staircase which we presume was originally an attic, which had been partitioned to make two bedrooms. The room was not at all as described, unless boutique is Irish for shoebox, when we entered the room the window had been opened and the room had been invaded by flies, this must have been a regular occurance as the walls were covered with black marks where the flies had been swatted by previous visitors. The ceiling was dirty with dust and cobwebs covering the smoke detector, the curtain pelmet was filthy with thick black dust lining the inside. The carpet was also dirty.
On a positive note, the bed sheets were spotlessly clean, but the top quilt looked very well used. Our furniture complimenting the georgian residence was a dressing table and a shared bedside cabinet, the "wardrobe" was an open alcove with a hanging rail fitted across the wall. Our en suite was a approximately the width of a tiny shower cubicle with a small sink and toilet. the "bathroom" door would not close let alone lock.
The multi (4)channel TV had no remote and when the residents in the adjoining room sat on their bed our bed moved. The walls were thin, the adjoining residents were not at all noisy but we could clearly hear all of their conversations.
As we left the hotel we remembered the photo of the elegant georgian front door surrounded by green foilage, we could not find either, yes there was a door but nothing likr the photo and there was certainly no foilage.
Would we visit Dublin again? definately, would we use this hotel again? Definately Not.
If you are looking to stay in Dublin, please look for a place near St Steven's Green. Look for EVEN numbers at it pertains to Dublin 2,4,6,8 etc (south of the LIffy River). This Brown's Dump is a HOSTEL, but they take advantage of their location to charge rates comparable to the Shelbourne Hotel. Please do not do business with this place: you can anticipate torn curtains, sheets with holes, no amenities, and dirty socks (even a life preserver?) hanging from the window ledge. The service was ignorant and while your stay will be memorable, it won't be for the right reasons. I've reported them to Failte Ireland and Consumer Affairs. Cruise on.. and look up Browne's (with an E) on St Steven's green for a delightful, hygenic stay. Failte Ireland!
